The annual Chamber of Commerce banquet is set for Thursday night March 29 at 7 00 p m at PAR. Mr Marquardt will speak and awards will be presented for Citizen of the Year and Rural Citizen of the Year Cont d to Page 2.
A rabies vaccination clinic will be held from 4 to 6 p m Thursday March 29 at the De Leon High School Agriculture Building. Dogs and cats may receive rabies shots and distemper vaccines. Dr Michael Burk of the De Leon Veterinary Clinic will administer the shots.
Evangelist Darrel Rickart of Lubbock will lead a series of gospel meetings April 2 to 6 at the De Leon Church of Christ on Highway 6 Navarro Street. Services are set for 7 30 p m nightly and the public is invited to attend.
The De Leon Booster Club hosts a boxing tournament Friday and Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at De Leon City Hall. Proceeds benefit the Bret Sharp Memorial Scholarship Fund, supporting a yearly college scholarship for a deserving senior. Boxers from area towns and thirty De Leon boys will participate.
De Leon Public Schools will host the District 10-A UIL Literary Meet on Saturday March 31 with James Perkins directing. High school entries include Poetry Interpretation and Prose Reading across multiple students, plus journalism categories, Ready Writing, Spelling, Typing, Shorthand, and One-Act Play with a large roster. elementary and junior high lists cover Oral Reading, Story Telling, Number Sense, Ready Writing, Spelling, and Picture Memory with numerous participants and alternates.
Congressman Charles W. Stenholm announces a $38,000 grant to Central Texas Opportunities, Inc., headquartered in Coleman, by the Community Services Administration. Serving Comanche, Coleman, Callahan, Eastland, Stephens, Brown, and Runnels counties, the six month program begins January 1, 1979 to assist eligible families facing winter energy emergencies or life threatening situations due to energy costs.
A gospel meeting series runs Sunday April 1 through Sunday April 8 at the new South Side Church of Christ on Highway 16. Services are 10 30 a m and 6 p m on Sundays and 7 30 p m on weekdays. Speaker is Jerry Johnson of Mullin. Public is invited. The congregation formerly met as the North Side Church of Christ and moved to De Leon in 1948.
Robert H. Simmons, vice president of Southern Savings and Loan Association in Brownwood, was named to the 1979 Service Corporation Committee of the United States League of Savings Associations. Announcement came from Joseph T. Benedict, league president and Freedom Federal Savings and Loan president. The U.S. League is the main trade group for the savings and loan industry, representing over 4,400 associations nationwide.
The St Jude Children's Research Hospital Wheels for Life Bike-a-thon in De Leon ended with 39 riders. Distances ranged from 6 to 42 miles, and volunteers plus donors supported both two mile and longer routes. Notable riders included Victor Ybarre and Gary Brownlee with 42 miles, and 31 participants on the two mile course.
Officials from the National Peanut Growers Group met in Washington with Department of Agriculture leaders on March 20 to press for raising the 1979 quota support rate of 420 per ton. Attending were NPGG Chairman Emmett Reynolds and members from Georgia, North Carolina, and Oklahoma, plus Deputy Secretary Jim Williams and other USDA officials. The group cited an 11 percent 1978 prices paid index and pressed for reassessment, with plans for further talks if needed and noting involvement by Senator Talmadge and Representatives Watkins and Stenholm aides.
The Fair Ladies aboard the luxury liner Stella Solaris, under Captain Michael Benas, sailed from Galveston on March 8 for a Caribbean voyage with 700 passengers and crew. Ports included Montego Bay Jamaica and Grand Cayman Island. highlights featured Rose Hall Great House and Mayan ruins at Tulum. Passengers listed include Billie Reynolds, Billie Butler, Kenneth Paul, Dorothy Tidwell, and others.

The De Leon School Tax Office offers a form to claim a $5,000 homestead exemption from school taxes. Any residental homestead owner may claim up to $5,000 of its value, with an affidavit required by the owner or a family member if the owner is incapacitated. One exemption per property. If claiming 65 or older, no extra certificate is needed. Return the completed form to the tax office.
