For fifteen years the E S A has hosted a Mexican supper seen as a local tradition in De Leon. The event draws strong community support as residents claim the food is among the best Mexican in town. Attendance and interest are expected to rise again this Friday night.
Invitations extend for a gospel meeting at the Church of Christ in De Leon from March 29 to April 4. Services will be at 7:00 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. on weekdays, 10:35 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. Sunday, with no Monday morning service. Guest speaker is Paul McClung, Wichita Falls preacher and Abilene Christian College graduate.
A De Leon column praises local firemen and neighbors for service, notes a peanut promotion by Mrs. V. Ruby Park reaching multiple cities, and extols peanut oil as a versatile cooking oil that preserves flavor, resists odors, and supports the peanut industry nationwide.
Revival services will be held at Northside Baptist Church from March 28 to April 4 with Rev Donnie Melton preaching. C L Mohon Jr will direct songs and services begin at 7 30. Everyone is cordially invited.
Last week deadline set for obtaining 1971 license plates with distribution at City Hall. Residents are reminded to visit City Hall before the March 31 cutoff to secure plates.
Dr. H Q Sibley acting executive director of the Texas Animal Health Commission ordered a 60 day restriction on swine movements to control hog cholera. Movement of feeder and breeder swine requires a permit after herd inspection with direct shipments allowed for slaughter. Special permissions, sanitation rules, and pre movement inspections apply.
National Future Homemakers of America Week runs March 28 to April 3 with 600000 members in over 12000 chapters nationwide. National president Ruth Ann Hockenbroch, a senior from Middleburg Pennsylvania, says FHA members care about current events and prepare for the future through community projects and leadership experiences. The organization, founded June 11 1945, aims to broaden home economics education through service, mentoring, and youth development with the 1971 state meeting set for Memorial Auditorium Dallas on April 23-24.
The De Leon Peanut Company awarded four area peanut farmers $100 each for top yields in irrigated and dry land peanuts. Winners include Buster McDonald of Comanche for irrigated 20 acre minimum, Jerry Stark of Dublin for 50 acre irrigated, Dalton Perkins of Comanche for dry land 20 acres, and Norman Moore of Sidney for dry land 59 acres. Awards based on ASC figures in Comanche with no sale restrictions.
Voters in Justice of the Peace precinct No 4 approve off premise alcohol sales by a 158 to 128 margin on Saturday. The dry wets controversy stretches back to 1968 with multiple legal challenges and appeals culminating in a March vote favoring wet status. Commissioner's Court will canvass Thursday. eight businesses may open by April 2.
Martha Jane Moody Stephens will become Comanche County Home Demonstration Agent for the Texas Agriculture Extension Service, effective June 1 1971. A Baylor University graduate, she has taught home economics at Axtell High School, Mills County and presently at Comanche High School, living near Gustine.
De Leon Bearcats place 5th of 21 in their division at the Red Dog Relays. Team clocked a best year time 3.40.2 in the mile relay. Herman Hardin wins high jump 5 8 with teammates Aguero Hardin Ruth. Other De Leon placers include Richardson pole vault 10 6 Kimmell 10 3 Hardin 6th 440 dash 4th and Caruth 3rd 880. Coach Waggoner says squad shaping for District meet April 3 in De Leon. Also notes Albany Relays Saturday and junior high meets in Comanche Friday and Eastland meet for girls.
The 1971 Junior-Senior Banquet took place Friday night March 19 in the school cafeteria with Arabian Night as the theme. Mr. Al Strasner gave the invocation, Underwood's catered the meal, and 12 sophomore girls served.
