Gayle Wilkerson highlights National Peanut Month in De Leon with a special edition featuring a tour of De Leon Peanut Company and step by step peanut processing explanations by Jim Wilson and William Fair. Local merchants support the edition and S & M Cafe announces drive in service.
March is National Peanut Month as area farmers and De Leon Peanut Company showcase the plant’s operations. From receipt to shelling, cleaning, sizing, and grading, the facility details the journey of peanuts through conveyors, electric eye sorting, and separate seed and edible lines. Tim Ratliffe oversees the Durant plant operation with local managers handling farm and plant divisions. payroll reaches about three quarters of a million dollars annually.
City officials led by Mayor Clyde Brinson study a new animal control ordinance targeting dogs and cats and limiting livestock within De Leon. It would require city licensing, vaccination, and strict leash rules with penalties up to 200 dollars, plus emergency enactment if rabies appears nearby.
The Texas Highway Patrol investigated 15 rural traffic accidents in Comanche County during February. Two people died and nine were injured. The year to date shows 26 rural crashes with two deaths and 20 injuries in the county.
Chuck Bush of the Bearcat team and Christi Keith of the Kittens were named to the 10-A all district squads at a district coaches meeting. Honorable mention went to Weldon Day Randall Sanders and Roberta Hodges of De Leon. Girls selections include Sheila Vaughan Ruth Ann Keith De Leon and Toni McInerny Ranger with several Goldthwaite and Early players also noted.
The Department of Public Safety officers from Waco will teach a defensive driving course at De Leon City Hall on Monday March 26 and Tuesday March 27 from 6 to 10 pm. The book costs a small fee. insurance discounts may apply after completion. Sign up at City Hall by March 23.

Luther Lee Hammon II, 44, of De Leon died Monday after his tractor-trailer crashed near Mason on U.S. 377. The Golden Oak Milling driver was trapped in the burning rig, which firemen doused in about fifteen minutes. Police and officials await a cause. services set for 2:00 p.m. Thursday at Northside Baptist Church.
The Stephenville Country Opry staged its first Special Variety Show for Senior Citizens on Tuesday March 6 attracting 142 65 Club members and guests. The 800 foot stage hosted a fast paced program with Glenn Vowell as MC Lavera Vowell plus the Texas Country Cloggers Jerry Weast Susie Q Star Bob and Hilda Faglie and the Country Opry Band. More than twenty five acts offered country western bluegrass and gospel music including Blue Grass Combinations featuring Jimmy Hardin and Jack Boen of De Leon. The 65 Club members enjoyed a meal at Red Bandana Steak House in Stephenville with hostesses Donna Bruton Sandy Files Tola Bailey Jeanette Belyeu LaJoyce Davis Mary Beth Hodges Lena Taylor and Sue Wilson.
The fourth annual Kitten Relays, with field events starting at 1:00 p.m. and finals at 6:45 p.m., will feature high school and junior high girls teams from Ranger Cross Plains Early Albany and other area schools. Trophy presentations follow at 9:00 p.m. Readouts include 1977 records in multiple events by Breckenridge Albany Cisco De Leon and others, with Tipton Cisco and Smalley Albany highlighted.
A House Ways and Means Committee approved the Tax Relief Amendment to provide broader tax relief for Texans. The measure funds school districts for revenue losses, freezes taxes for elderly and disabled homeowners, and grants agricultural land use value treatment while exempting intangible wealth from property taxes. It also expands vehicle exemptions and caps state appropriation growth to personal income growth.
