In the De Leon Free Press March 8 1979 issue readers are urged to contact Mr Perkins for explanations about the large school district building program. The note stresses availability for individual or group meetings and notes substantial time spent by the school board Mr Perkins and the architects on the project.
Over 225 people gathered at PAR Country Club on February 28 for the Upper Leon Soil and Water Conservation District Seventh Conservation Awards Banquet. Banks across the district sponsored the event and awards, with Gene Gilbreath as emcee and J. W. Sadberry introducing guests. Sammy Robinett won the Conservation Farmer Award, Mrs. Jack Johnson was honored as Conservation Homemaker, and other honorees included Alva Lee Gilman, Gary Hall, Don Massingill, Norman Richardson, Jule Richmond, Jasper Williamson, Hilda Underwood, Harry Bradberry, Charlie Ben Bradberry, and Kathy Choate as Poster Contest winner.
Mrs. Jerri Asmus, De Leon schools counselor, says testing will occur in March and April. Grades 4–10 take SRA and Iowa tests, with 11th and 12th graders on different exams. Parents are invited to review their child’s results and discuss progress with the counselor.
A fund is established at Farmers and Merchants Bank in De Leon to cover hospitalization expenses for John Brownlee. He was airlifted by helicopter to Abilene Hospital. Employed by Golden Oak Milling Company and delivers the Abilene Reporter News. He has no insurance.
The 1979 track season begins this week as junior high teams race to Bangs on Friday and high school squads travel there on Saturday for the first meets. Field events start Friday at noon, prelims at 2 30 p.m., finals at 6 p.m. Saturday starts at 9 a.m. with field events, running prelims at 10 a.m., and finals at 3 p.m.
Wesley Mathis and Roy Johnson filed for two vacancies on the De Leon Independent School District board joining Daryleen Hodges and Jack Johnson on the ballot. Terms of Jack Johnson and Harold Gene Higginbottom expire. Jim Wilkerson filed for Place 1 on the City Council with Doyle Smith. Wilford Millsap for Place 2. Hospital board incumbents Joe Morgan John Beaty and Larry Boyd also filed. Last filing date is Wednesday March 7 for the Saturday April 7 elections.
The De Leon Independent School District board examines repair work and additions with input from a citizens committee TEA reviewers and an architect. They project a total bond between 1.5 and 2.2 million, impacting taxes up to about 40 percent if the maximum is issued, with election targets set for May 19 and an April 23 call.
De Leon residents are urged to volunteer for the Wheels For Life Bike a thon to raise funds for St Jude Children s Research Hospital. Riders must register sponsorships, with $25 earning a t shirt and $75+ a biker s backpack. The event runs March 23 after 3 00 pm and March 24 at St Jude s.
The energy department announced tilt regulation last week allowing refiners to pass higher production costs to consumers. Officials predict average gasoline may climb from 87c to 94c per gallon within two years, with leaded and unleaded gaps to be narrowed. Oil firms cite higher costs for unleaded production as key driver.
The De Leon tax office offers a $5,000 school tax homestead exemption following the Texas Tax Relief Amendment. Homeowners must file an annual affidavit between January 1 and April 30, 1979, swearing ownership and residency as of January 1, 1979. Only one homestead exemption is allowed per person, even with two homes. incapacitated owners may have someone file. About 800 to 900 forms have been signed. late filers will receive a mail-in form. If claiming the US year and over exemption, staff auto-claims the exemption already.
The annual De Leon Pee Wee Basketball Tournament sponsored by 4 H is held this week at the De Leon gym with boys and girls divisions for fifth and sixth grade. Games started Tuesday and will run Thursday Friday and Saturday with champions crowned Saturday night.
