March 3 is the filing deadline for city offices and school board seats in De Leon. As of March 2, mayor candidates are Pat Eisenrich Connie Gardner and Scotty Campbell. City Council contenders are R M Tate and Glenn Bruton. School Board candidate is Bob Huddleston. Hospital Board incumbents Fred Williams and W H Smith Jr have filed for re election with a March 4 deadline.

J J and Wesley Mathis of De Leon exhibited the grand champion boar Quartermaster at the National Southwestern Hampshire Type Conference and Sale in Sweetwater. Sold for 4500 dollars to Dale McGraw of Pleasanton, the Texas win marked the first grand championship by a Texas boar in the 1970s. The sale drew buyers from the United States Mexico and Japan with 147 Hampshire swine sold totaling 86195 dollars. Breeding boars averaged 782 per head and gifts 422 per head.
