Comanche County and De Leon celebrations noted in local column

The Comanche Chief reports De Leon will turn seventy five in 1956 and Comanche County marks its centennial. County commission will pay the City of Comanche for fire services outside city limits from June 1955 to January 1956. Peg peanuts and festival melon contest promotions blur the page with local notices and light humor.

Patterson Family Attends Dr Greer Funeral in De Leon

Mr and Mrs Herman Patterson of Lubbock attended the funeral of Dr Neil Greer in De Leon on Tuesday. Patterson previously lived in the area and worked for the Free Press during R L Scott’s editorship, leaving at age fifteen.

Family Visit in Iraan Spans Several Days

Mrs. C. E. Dry along with Charlene and Freddie visited Iraan last week staying with her mother Mrs. G. B. Johnson. The trip gathered family time across several days.

Nelda Morgan Receives Master of Nursing Degree

Miss Nelda Morgan of De Leon earned the Master of Nursing degree at the Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing ceremony in Severance Hall on June 15. She previously earned a BA in Sociology in 1952 from Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas, and is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James H. Morgan.

Silliman Evans Dies in Fort Worth at 61

Nashville publisher Silliman Evans 61 died of a heart attack in his Fort Worth Club room during a funeral trip for Amon G. Carter. He was publisher of the Nashville Tennessean and Am erican Airlines director, survived by wife, two sons, a granddaughter Janet Evans, a brother Henry Moore Evans, and a sister Mrs. Edgar Neil. Funeral services were held in Brentwood Methodist Church with burial at Woodlawn Cemetery.

Free Press Force Receives Home Grown Peaches

W. H. Smith Sr. presented the Free Press force with a sack of peaches Monday morning. The note accompanying the gift thanks the team, praising the home grown fruit and adding appreciation for the gesture.

Nabors Lake Pool Opens for Season

Nabors Lake Swimming Pool opens for the season with a filtered water supply and a shallow area for children. A lifeguard will be on duty during swim sessions and refreshments are available at a concession stand. The usual policy prohibits swimming in the lake itself and the management disclaims liability for accidents.

Graveside services were held in De Leon Cemetery for Dr. N. E. Ross Greer of Lockney on Tuesday afternoon at 5 30 o clock. Dr Greer passed away Sunday morning. A complete obituary will be carried in next week's issue of the Free Press.

R S McCharen Former County Judge Dies in Abilene

R S McCharen former county judge of Comanche County served 1935 to 1941 and died Monday June 20 in Abilene at his daughter's home. Funeral at First Methodist Church De Leon with Rev Floyd Thrash. interment in De Leon Cemetery. He helped build the 1940 Comanche County Courthouse and was a noted farmer and civic leader. He was born in Mississippi in 1872 and settled in De Leon after moving from Comanche.

Allen Howard Bibby born March 9 1889 in Arkansas died June 24 1955 at his De Leon home aged 66 years 3 months 15 days. He married Ivah Hampton in 1918 and is survived by his wife son and two grandchildren among others. Funeral rites were held at McCharen's Lake on his farm with Sharp and Nabors directing.
