Tornadic winds lash De Leon leaving heavy damage

A powerful midweek storm struck De Leon with winds described as the strongest ever, ripping plate glass, uprooting trees, and unroofing sheds. Electricity was out for hours while Texas Electric Service crews repaired lines. one cafe sustained severe damage and hail touched nearby crops. Two suspects linked to a Blanket State Bank robbery were arrested after a multi‑county operation involving FBI, Rangers and local sheriffs.

E. M. Warren 67 dies in De Leon Texas

Erastus Milligan Warren born March 15 1887 in Comanche County Texas died at the local hospital June 12 1955 aged 67 years 2 months and 12 days. Mahan Sadberry Families Hold Ninth Annual Reunion

Members of the Mahan and Sadberry families gathered at Cisco Lake for their ninth annual meeting on Sunday June 12. Seventy attended while several were ill. Aunt Fionia Sadberry, the oldest member, led the day of swimming, miniature golf, and reminiscences followed by a noon meal.

Pastor Resigns from First Baptist Church in De Leon

Rev. Tommy L. Austin announced his resignation at Sunday morning service on June 12. He accepted the pastorate of Highland Baptist Church in Arlington and will move with his family this Saturday. In about a year in De Leon he led growth and made many friends who regret his departure yet wish them happiness in their new role.

Thrash Reinstated At First Methodist De Leon

Rev. Floyd Thrash is returned to the De Leon Methodist Church after the Central Texas Conference in Fort Worth. The church praises a successful year under his leadership and welcomes him, Mrs. Thrash, and daughter Judy back for another year. Rev. J. D. Cole joins the circuit, with the Coles occupying the circuit parsonage this week. De Leon extends greetings to the Thrash family and new pastors. Mr. and Mrs. L. E. Forrest attended Conference, with Mrs. W. P. Weaver and Miss Bertha Ross also present.

Mary Jane Graham Ross born February 18 1865 in Pontotoc Mississippi died at her daughter’s home near De Leon Texas at 99 years 3 months and 18 days. Surviving children include Mrs Gertie Ross Pounds H E Ross and J A Ross with 16 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren. Funeral from the Primitive Baptist Church De Leon with Elder H H Garrett and Revs Frank and Willie Skaggs officiating. Interment De Leon Cemetery.

New OES Officers Installed In Pub Ceremony

The local Chapter No. 693 of the OES held a candle light installation at the Masonic Hall on Saturday night June 11 at 8. Officers installed for the coming year include Nell Rose Mahon and many others with Mrs. Mahon delivering the address under the theme Fidelity. The ceremony featured musicians and flower bearers from the chapter.

Funeral services were held for Mrs Tom Grisham of Waco at the First Baptist Church. Dr Dunlap assisted by Rev Tommy L Austin conducted the service. She leaves husband and six children, plus a brother in California. two children precede her in death. Interment in De Leon.
