The De Leon PTA will meet Friday June 4 at 8:00 p.m. in the high school auditorium. Plans and committees will be finalized and officers elected. Attendees are asked to submit written suggestions for programs projects and fundraising to the appropriate committee chairman.
Gayle Wilkerson reports on the De Leon High School 1976 graduation with candle ceremony and 424 graduates. She missed Nimitz High School in Irving where her nephew James Edward Hilliard joined the crowd. The report notes weather interrupted the elementary track meet and hail plus wind damaged areas south of Gorman and in the Rucker Community.
The Farmers and Merchants Bank of De Leon Texas elected John W May as Vice President at the May 27 meeting and set his duties for June 14. He is from Brownwood and joins from First Co man Che Bank as Assistant VP and Cashier. Lanny Butler was promoted to Vice President and began as Loan Officer October 6 1975 after prior roles in Ft Worth and at Continental National Bank.
A six week summer session starts Monday June 7 1976 at 9:00 a.m. at the high school. Registration is the first morning. Courses include English Usage Spelling and Handwriting and Literature with $50 tuition for one or all three. Tuition reduced if more than eleven students enroll.
Comanche County ranked second in Texas pecan production for 1975 with a harvest of 3.22 million pounds. Texas total pecan output reached 50 million pounds valued at about 19.92 million dollars, despite pests and heavy rains.
The thirty sixth annual American Legion Boys State in Texas opened at the University of Texas with 900 high school students and two from Mexico registering. Byron Randal Smith of De Leon was among registrants, entering as a Nationalist or Federalist and later serving as a Boys State official for a day after election.
Memorial weekend golf tournament drew players from across the state with 210 men forming 105 teams. Winds and showers affected play but fans enjoyed the event with campers on site and a Women’s Golf Association booth area offering a sandwich stand and a golf ball contest. Hole 2 featured a closest-to-the-hole contest for a 19 inch TV. Players competed over 54 holes in five flights with winners and consolation brackets. Championship players included Tad Tate and Randy Weehunt, C M Caraway III and Denver Doggett, James Perkins and Bob Edgar, Jack Locke, and others.
Voters head to De Leon polls Saturday June 5 for the Democratic primary runoff. Railroad Commissioner contenders include Jon Newton and Jerry Sadler. Judge, Court of Criminal Appeals unexpired term candidates are W. T. Phillips and Carl Dally. As of June 1, 56 absentee ballots were filed at the Comanche Clerk's Office.
Thomas Butane Co suffered a burglary last Monday night May 24. Owner Thomas found the door pried and a cash drawer missing about $30 plus a nearly $300 calculator later that day. No leads were reported as county officers continue investigation.
The 65 Club visit to Six Flags Over Texas on May 26 was trimmed from five charter buses to two due to threatening weather. Members rode many rides including Log Flume and Runaway Mine Train and enjoyed shows like the Wild West Show and Dolphin Show. Hostesses were Lena Taylor, LaJoyce Davis, Sharon Lee, Tola Wilson, Mary Ellen Millington, and Sue Wilson.
Thirty five seniors graduated from De Leon High School in a combined baccalaureate program. Diplomas were presented by Principal Al Strasner, Superintendent James Perkins, and School Board President Bob Huddleston. Scholarships and awards went to multiple students including Shirlee Chapp and Perri Lou Short.
Lena Taylor and Delores Sharp finished third in the first flight with a 63 at Brownwood Country Club in the Women’s Invitational Partnership Golf Tournament held last Thursday. Bloodworth and Betty Humphries fell short in the first flight while Janeway Eldred paired for second at 62. Championship flight winners were Frasher and Noble from Temple.
A Holstein cow owned by Bobby J. Traweek of Dublin set a Texas junior 4-year-old registered record under the DHIR Holstein-Friesian program. Pearl completed a lactation of 27,590 pounds of milk and 911 pounds of butterfat, surpassing the previous best of 27,130 pounds and 887 pounds.
