Record Field Set For PAR Partnership Tournament

The Annual PAR Partnership Tournament opens Saturday with six flights and a strong field. Local pro Howard Burttschell notes top competition in the Championship Flight and returning 1969 winners T A Averillo and Marvin Kelly. Charles Birdwell and Bill Sikes of Brownwood are also favored, with Edward Brooks returning with a new partner. A free dance and buffet follow the event, hosted by The Establishment. tickets for non-contestants are $2. PAR Golf Course will be closed to non entrants Friday through Sunday. The course is described as in top notch condition.

Fireworks Display Adds Spark to De Leon Peach Festival

The festival features a 15 minute fireworks show at 10 p.m. Wednesday and Saturday behind the Riding Arena near Anis festival grounds with 75 shots. Parade floats must line up by 6 p.m. for judging, while the Queen of the De Leon Peach and Melon Festival is chosen Tuesday August 3 at 9 p.m. on the festival stage. Eleven contestants attend interviews at 3 p.m. that day for final judging.

About 200 invitations go out yearly for the De Leon fiddlers contest. Registration opens 8:30 and the program starts at 9:00 on Friday August 6. Contestants play two numbers, with four age groups and a grand champion after four winners.

Ice Cold Melon and Parade Bring Local Festival News

About 17 000 pounds of watermelons will be served free on Main Street Saturday August 7 at 5 00 p m. Melons go into cold storage Monday August 2 for one week. Barnes leads Lt Governor Ben Barnes in the 57th Annual parade Wednesday August 4 at 7 00 p m with Representative Lynn Nabers of Brownwood. The Lt Governor attends ex students reunion Saturday at 10 00 a m in the High School Auditorium.

Reminder for Local Produce Festival Entries

The notice invites growers to bring melons peaches and cantaloupes to the festival shed on Wednesday August 4 from 8 00 to 12 00 a m. Entry rules specify one half bushel of one peach variety per grower and one entry per family of either one large melon or three small melons.

Debra Whitehurst Chosen to Model in Cox Show at Ridglea Club

Debra Whitehurst is selected by Cox & Company Fort Worth to model in the Back to School Show on Saturday August 7 at Ridglea Country Club. About fifteen models will participate including five boys. Lee Randall will host, Kathryn Fry handles fashion ware, and the models include pageant winners and contestants. Whitehurst travels to Fort Worth for fittings on Saturday the 31st, modeling four outfits.
