Festival Preparations In De Leon Area Boost Local Show

De Leon residents rally for the Festival with strong home support and a new building nearing completion. A thousand melons will be sliced on the streets as preparations continue. Mr. W M Coley ends 35 years on Route Two with a final trip tomorrow. Watermelons grow plentiful and buyers are encouraged to spread word and vote for the queen while merchants offer tickets.

Children to Receive Second Polio Vaccine

Parents urged to bring all children who had the first April shot to the Elementary lunch room on Tuesday August 2 at 1 PM for the second polio vaccination. Dr. A M Reynolds and Dr. P E Smith, assisted by school nurse Mrs Avis Brinson, with aides Mesdames Schuman Grove and Katherine Polnac administering shots.

Singing at Rock Bluff Sunday Afternoon

A singing event is planned at Rock Bluff this Sunday starting at 2 o clock in the afternoon. Local organizers invite residents to attend and enjoy performer lineup.

Peach and Melon Motorcade To Travel To Surrounding Towns

Oscar Hammit and W. B. Nowlin organize a Peach and Melon Motorcade departing from the High School at 8 am Thursday August 4. About 20 cars signed up with room for more, with decorative options and free crepe paper. Stops include Dublin Stephenville Lingleville Desdemona Gorman Carbon Eastland Ranger Cisco Rising Star Comanche and other towns. Rides may be provided for those without transport. return to De Leon around 5 pm.

Electric Fair Opens at Lake Eanes Park in 1955 REA Meeting

The Comanche County Electric Cooperative schedules the 1955 Electric Fair for August 2 at Lake Eanes Park with a special August 1 preview. Highlights include Everett Duncan and Jesse Sides, Willie Wirehand Quiz Contest, and a new Cake Baking Contest. The event accompanies a members’ meeting to elect directors and review a year of operations. The coop serves over 6,000 members across seven counties.

Helen Harmon to Ride in De Leon Peach Parade With 100-Year-Old Gear

Helen Harmon and her buckskin horse Maude will ride in the De Leon Peach and Watermelon Festival Parade on August 11. She uses a Ladies Side Saddle over 100 years old that belonged to the late Mrs. M. R. Counts, mother of Post Master Tate Counts. Her riding habit is also over a century old.

City Park Improvement Project Now Under Way

The De Leon community plans a new City Park with shade trees benches and an exhibit building. The project includes a garden club house a stock and poultry area and a swimming pool pavillion and space for sidewalk vendors. The phased work aims to benefit residents year round with the Peach and Melon Festival slated for August 11 12 and 13.

This Ghost Business to Be Presented Friday at Highland

A mystery comedy in three acts titled This Ghost Business will be performed by Highland Community Friday evening July 29 at 8 30. The open air show seven miles west of Dublin features Billy Keith Wayne Thiebaud Buxton Jacks Royce Thiebaud and others in roles including Joe Hardy Eddie Canfield Laura Hardy Mabel Canfield Effie Forrest Magnolia Marie and more. No admission is charged but a free will offering will be taken to cover expenses. Public invitation is extended.
