1970 Census Counts 5203 Housing Units in Comanche County

The 1970 Census reports 5203 housing units and 4212 households with at least one TV in Comanche County. It lists details on air conditioning, appliances, age of housing, utilities, and occupancy, with vacancy and sale/rent figures. Copies of the Detailed Characteristics report are available from the Government Printing Office or Commerce field offices.

Effie Dobson Leads 58th Peach and Melon Festival Queen

Effie Dobson of De Leon and the HD Ranch tops the 58th Peach and Melon Festival lineup with regional title holder status. Joined by Sen Tom Creighton and Rep Lynn Nabers, she advances from district 12 Morgan Mill to the Region 6 contest in San Angelo and will compete nationally in November. Region 6 spans Texas New Mexico Oklahoma Arkansas and Louisiana.

School Opens August 21 After Remodeling

The opening of school is near as in service runs August 10 to 18 at local sites and Cisco Jr College. The first official day for students is Monday August 21. remodeling includes new curtains, painted rooms, carpet, updated woodwork and trim, renovated admin offices, and fresh coatings for athletic facilities. Next week’s Free Press will publish complete staff listings and registration schedules.

Texas county census reveals income and labor trends 1969 1970

The 1970 census for Conanche County Texas shows average family income of 5756 dollars and per capita income of 2364 dollars, with 11 898 residents and 70.7 percent of men and 31.9 percent of women in the labor force. It notes schooling levels, migration within and outside the state, and government employment shares. Copies of the Texas General Social and Economic Characteristics report are sold for six dollars from GPO or Commerce field offices.

Gospel Meeting at Northside Church of Christ

A Gospel meeting is in progress at Northside Church of Christ and runs through Sunday July 30. Services begin at 10 30 am and 7 00 pm on Sundays and 7 45 pm on weekdays with speaker C O Etheredge of Austin. Everyone is invited to attend.

Peanuts as protein and Lake Proctor bass stock planned

Dr. Lewis M. Roberts of the Rockefeller Foundation suggests peanuts and legumes could double in production within 25 years to combat malnutrition. Texas Parks and Wildlife plans to stock Lake Proctor with striped bass, a new species for the state, while local notes advertise a PAR golf tournament and upcoming festival preparations.

Watermelon Slicing and Pet Parade at August Festival

Festival committee stored 17 0004 watermelons for a free ice cold slice on Saturday August 5 at 5 PM on Main Street Texas Avenue. Entry for pet and bicycle parades opens at the Dairy Treat August 2 with judges awarding ribbons and prize money from 5 to 1 dollars.
