The Beach and Melon Festival unveils a new mini bike decorating division for children with entry at the Dairy Treat 6 30 pm Wednesday August 1. George Mason leads bikes. Bill Wilkerson handles pet parade entries. prizes range from 2 to 10 dollars, with ribbons awarded before the parade.
J C W notes the Peach and Melon Festival begins Tuesday night with a record edition and many new attractions. Gayle Mahan leads a 23 member committee, thanking merchants and supporters for a large festival edition and inviting readers to enjoy the events and pictures provided.
The Free Press publishes the weather report issued by the U S Corps of Engineers. It covers a 24 hour period from 8 a m to 7 a m recording temperature and moisture levels across monitored areas.
All girls planned to participate in the Little Miss De Leon contest are asked to practice Monday night at the stage on the festival grounds.
The festival committee invites all Square Dance Clubs to De Leon on Saturday August 4. After the Mel on slicing they will dance on Main Street then the State Peach Queen Contest, continuing at the festival grounds. Fee is $1 per couple and several callers are expected.
The Old-Time Fiddlers Contest in Leon attracts contestants from Oklahoma, New Mexico and Texas. The event features registration at 8 30 in front of the festival shed with Dale Shoemaker as Master of Ceremonies and Otho Warren coordinating. A major festival attraction, attendees are urged to plan in advance.
The De Leon Ex-Students Association will hold its annual meeting on Saturday August 4 with registration at 9 30 a m and the program at 10 a m in the High School Auditorium. Guest speaker Clyde Noonkester 1955 graduate of De Leon High School will attend with his wife Joan and two sons Scot and Alan. Clyde coaches and teaches in Clarendon Texas after attending Tarleton State and Howard Payne College. A short business meeting will elect a vice president and secretary treasurer. The 1923 50 year class will be honored along with oldest student and farthest traveler. Families welcome.
The Upper Leon River Municipal Water District increases charges to De Leon residents to 450.00 dollars monthly, raising 50 cents per user. The summer rate remains 30 cents per thousand over five thousand gallons. City Commission approves the measure.
The Seed Spitting Contest is set for Saturday August 4 at 4 PM on Main Street sponsored by the De Leon Free Press. Trophies go to first through third. last year’s distances and winners are listed. Float entries must display numbers, lineup by 6:30 PM at Farm Road 587 and Highway 16, parade marshal Benny Morris promises a good parade. festival office phone 6600 for float numbers.
De Leon public schools will offer a state funded kindergarten starting in 1973 74 for eligible five year olds. Half day for full year or full day for half year options available with possible full day for educationally handicapped students. Miss Diana Irick hired to teach. Registration August 7 8 from 8 00 to 3 30 at the elementary principal's office with birth certificates and immunization records.
