The De Leon Police Department asks De Leon businesses to provide two contact names and phone numbers for after hours emergency calls. The notice seeks quick notification of after hours incidents and directs business owners to respond with the listed information.
A week long festival schedule includes an open fiddlers contest on Friday night August 5 with no entry fee and on site registration. Grand champion will receive 150 dollars plus first place prize. Little Miss De Leon contestants include Anna Marie Rodriquez Talina Swint and others. A 4-H contest runs Wednesday morning with details via county home demonstration agent Sarah Tebow.
The De Leon Free Press will photograph Peach and Melon Festival duchesses or queen candidates lacking a print for the festival edition. Photos are free and will be made only on Wednesday July 20 at 2:00 p.m. at the Free Press office.
The Peach and Melon Festival hosts a three night Tractor and Truck Pull sanctioned by the Texas Tractor Pullers Association with a $9,500 purse. Events Thursday through Saturday include stock, non turbo, open classes, modified, economy modified, turbo and 4x4 divisions plus child age categories.
The State Comptroller lists district by district data on superintendent salaries elementary and secondary teacher pay average daily attendance and administrator to teacher ratios. Statewide averages show superintendent 41176 teacher salaries 19452 and 20140 for secondary teachers with daily attendance 2 673 746 and admin to teacher ratio 1 6. State Comptroller Bob Bullock mailed July sales tax rebate checks totaling 35.1 million to 974 Texas cities. Payments for May sales reported by June 30 show varied receipts with border and oil regions lagging behind. City by city figures include De Leon 2291.40 and Stephenville 29841.67, with 1983 year-to-date up 3.68 percent.
Weather across the region on July 19 reports hot conditions with scattered showers in the afternoon. Forecasts warn of high humidity and risk of heat for outdoor activities, with temperatures near record highs and storms possible in central sections.
A rehearsal is set for Thursday July 21 at 8:00 p.m. in the band hall to prepare for the Peach and Melon Festival. High school junior high and ex band students are urged to participate.

Smith will present and answer questions on peanut price support. Final election results for directors in Oklahoma District 2 and Texas District 3 will be announced.
