In special session the Texas Legislature advanced a 945.4 million dollar two year school financing package. The plan increases minimum salaries for experienced teachers, raises beginning pay, adds equalization funds, and expands maintenance and transportation aid. De Leon district gains 145000 dollars with 110600 increase. other local districts also see state aid changes as districts weigh local tax structures against the new funds.
De Leon Bearcats placed sixth in the Texas Football pre season rankings for 1977. The squad, state champions in 1975 and finalist last year, returns 13 lettermen and features standout players including Sig Wolfe and Jeff Rogers. One confirmed anthrax case in cattle diagnosed by a Stephenville veterinarian in Edna Hill near Dublin. Twenty cattle have died on six ranches and the area is quarantined. Federal authorities urge vaccination on adjoining ranches, which is done. Dry weather favors anthrax spores in the soil.
Comanche County Peanut Pest Management reports high Lesser Cornstalk Borer populations across the county with infestation in about half of plants in several fields. With peanuts pegging, control via watering in granular materials on irrigated peanuts or basal directed liquid sprays is recommended. County Extension Office provides more details.
In Texas Football magazine 1977 high school rankings, De Leon Bearcat running back Sig Wolfe is listed among blue-chip seniors. Wolfe stands 5-11 and weighs 202 pounds, noted alongside other top college prospects based on scouts and coaches' confidential recommendations.

Tim Beaty son of Mr and Mrs John Beaty received the Lone Star Farmer's degree at the 49th annual state FFA convention. He was among 1 354 Future Farmers statewide to earn this degree for leadership and agriculture activity. Donnie Morris Larry Womack Garth Priddy and Jimmy Mahan attended as voting delegates and local advisors.
The Fort Worth District of the Army Corps of Engineers plans to modify Copperas Creek Park entrances at Proctor Lake by closing the westernmost access from Highway 2861. Campers will be required to use the southeastern entrance to reach the park.
The Corps proposes a single entrance to a park near the project headquarters along highway 2861. The move aims to enhance visitor protection, reduce day traffic, streamline information distribution and camping fee collection. Public comments are invited by August 20 1977 via the Proctor Project Office or Operations Division in Fort Worth.

Parade by 5 30 in front of the Senior High School with prize money for civic commercial decorated and out of town floats plus duchesses cars and other events and a seed spitting contest August 6 on Main Street.
Firefighters estimate damage at De Leon High School between 20 000 and 25 000 dollars after an attic blaze caused by faulty wiring. Jimmie Dee Warren entered the building to shut doors as crews from Dublin Comanche Gorman and Rising Star fought the flames. Three classrooms and part of the hallway were damaged with bids for repairs to follow. Superintendent James Perkins says school will open as planned.
Local police recovered a bicycle belonging to Brad Sanders that had disappeared from the Dairy Treat. De Leon officers questioned suspects at City Hall after identifying the bike as Brad’s. a 24 year old woman was arrested and pled guilty, receiving a fine of 150 dollars plus 48 dollars in court costs.
The De Leon Police Department now uses a radar unit in patrol cars on loan from the Department of Public Safety. Chief Albert Biggs says the device improves public safety, with motorists already slowing down. New units cost 1800 to 2000 dollars, and nearby towns already use radar systems.
Comanche County Sheriff's Department documented one burglary six thefts one vandalism case and one assault complaint for June. Sheriff Shilo Garmon and Deputies Robert Donaldson led the patrols and investigations through the month.
W. B. Elliott received after hour calls totaling 162. Officers served thirty six warrants and forty six civil papers were executed. Jail population during the month of June numbered thirty eight.
Texas Young Americans for Freedom identified the top lawmakers from the 1977 session. The five best House members were Brad Wright, Bill Hollowell, Bob McFarland, Fred Orr, and one more. The four best senators named were Tom Creighton, Ike Harris, Grant Jones, and Walter Mengden.
De Leon football coach Jack Waggoner was named Coach Of The Year by Texas Football magazine in a feature alongside other class winners. The award, by the magazine with the Texas Sportswriters Association and with approval from the Texas Coaching Association and UIL, highlighted Waggoner despite De Leon’s bid for a second straight title.
