Eleven Festival Queen Contestants Vie For De Leon Title

Eleven local girls enter the seventh annual peach and Melan Festival queen contest. Each buys 100 tickets at one dollar to qualify for the Queen's Revue on August 3 at the festival grounds. A panel of out of town judges will select the queen on points after an informal tea and final judging that evening. The winner serves one year as De Leon’s official parade and festival representative. A $300 drawing for ticket buyers is held August 7 at 10:30 p.m. with the prize redeemable only at De Leon merchants.

A youth led revival at First Baptist Church in De Leon runs July 16 evenings at 7 30 with Mike Gillespie a Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary student from Kerrville Texas in charge of song services He stars in musical productions at Howard Payne College and is 24 and single Evangelist Mike Riley a Baylor University student from Oklahoma City and football team member leads the revival He has guided many youth revivals statewide inviting all to attend for spiritual enrichment

Cornstalk Borer Infests 65 Percent of De Leon Peanuts

Texas Agricultural Commissioner John C. White releases a progress bulletin on the lesser cornstalk borer in Central Texas peanut fields. Survey shows 65 percent of De Leon fields with larvae and up to 18 percent damage. Treatments reported on 54 percent. farmers urged to inspect emerging peanuts weekly and follow insecticide directions.

Comanche County Food Market Spending Tops Local Retail

The Standard Rate and Data Service reports Comanche County families spent about $1,133 per year on food if evenly divided among residents, with total take for local food outlets reaching $4,985,000 last year. Take-home food accounted for about 20 cents of every dollar in local retail. Car and automotive sales totaled $3,988,000 while general merchandise and department stores reached $3,000,000, reflecting strong local purchasing power amid rising incomes.

De Leon School Board Votes on Staff for 1971-72

The De Leon School Board met on July 6 1971 to approve staff contracts for the coming year. Actions included hiring Linda Tate as English and Girls P E teacher, aides Mrs Whitesides and Richard Mohon, bus drivers Allen Bibby and Bill Wheatley, and Cecelia Boswell as Migrant Teacher. Präsidental changes to the student handbook were discussed along with tax rates and bond indebtedness.

The De Leon cheerleaders for 1971 and 1972 led by Debra Whitehurst Debbie Gardner Brenda Nowlin D Lana Wilkerson and Rhonda Huddleston returned from camp with ribbons and memories They earned Outstanding Ribbons on Tuesday and Wednesday and an Excellent Ribbon on Thursday They finished with the top Ribbon for Beat the Lions and worked from 6 30 a m to 8 45 a m learning tumbling pom poms and new cheers under director Dr Owens of Tarleton and staff from Oklahoma University Texas Tech University of Texas University of Dallas and Oklahoma University

De Leon ISD Joins Regional Cooperative For Special Ed

De Leon Independent School District forms a cooperative with Comanche Rising Star Sidney Gustine and Cross Plains to run a supervised special education program for 1971 72 with Comanche acting as fiscal agent. Plans include a 1/2 unit teacher for De Leon and six students identified so far. Region XIV Education Service Center personnel in Abilene assist testing and program coordination.

Contest Rules For Peaches And Melons

Watermelons peaches and cantaloupes will be in the festival contest this year. Rules specify one half bushel entry per grower for cantaloupes. peaches allow one half bushel per grower for one variety. melons permit one large melon or three small melons per family. Entries arrive at the festival shed Wednesday morning August 4 from 9 to 12, will be recorded numbered and judged at 1 pm, and stay until Saturday night auctioned at 9 pm to the highest bidder.
