Peach and Melon Festival Set to Light Up De Leon in August
De Leon community gears for the Peach and Melon Festival starting August 1, with nightly entertainment for all ages. Duchesses and queen candidates can have photos taken July 20 at 2:00 p.m. for free in the De Leon Free Press.
Eleven Girls Enter Peach and Melon Festival Queen Contest
Eleven young ladies entered the Peach and Melon Festival Queen contest for the 1983 festival after an afternoon tea on Monday. Each must sell 100 queen tickets to qualify for the Queen’s Revue. tickets fund a 300 prize. The drawing, on Saturday August 6 at 11:00, selects the winner who need not be present.
De Leon Queen Contest Highlights and Schedule
A De Leon pageant offers a Miss De Leon queen title with a $300 drawing for contestants. Events include tea interviews on August 1, stage appearances, a charm course, and a formal gown interview. Entries Needed For Little Miss De Leon Contest
The Peach and Melon Festival seeks five year old girls from De Leon to enter the Little Miss De Leon contest with no entry fee. Register by calling the festival office at 893-6600 or 893-2122. The event takes place Monday night August 1 on the festival stage, with dress code a floor length gown. The winner rides the float with the queen and Miss De Leon in the street parade.

Eleven-Year Old Girl Struck By Car
An eleven-year-old girl visiting relatives on Highway 6 was struck by a slow moving car driven by Wendell Eaton near the Hwy 6 Cafe Thursday afternoon. Tina Cross of Mathis, niece of De Leon residents Clifford and Babbits, suffered cuts bruises and a concussion but was not seriously injured and remained in De Leon Hospital until Saturday.

Comanche County Names New Extension Agent Tebow
Mrs Sarah Mitchel Tebow Economics of Brownwood was named Comanche County Extension Agent Home Economics by the County Commissioners Court. She has served in Johnson County as Assistant County Extension agent for 20 years and will assume duties July 11 at the courthouse offices in Comanche, replacing Barbara Williams who resigned June 3.

Hunting and Fishing Licenses To Be Higher in Texas
Texas will raise hunting and fishing license fees effective September 1 with higher prices for basic resident fishing from 5 to 8 dollars and resident hunting from 5.25 to 8 dollars. The combined license rises to 12 dollars, boat registrations double, archery and dove stamps go to 6 dollars. Governor White vetoed a salt water stamp bill. nonresident licenses see limited changes while some five day licenses are repealed. Out of state migratory bird and shooting resort rules shift to a new nonresident small game license priced at 37.75 dollars.
