The De Leon Free Press highlights weekly Peach and Melon Festival updates by Betty Terrill ahead of August 16 events. Eddie Lindley chairs this year’s festivities as volunteers work hard. Eleven girls run for queen and will sell tickets. A local anecdote recalls George Mason’s jet boat mishap on Lake Proctor that left him in maroon underwear after a dramatic tug at the ladder. Little League season has ended.
Texas Attorney General John Hill visited De Leon as part of a ten county, three day swing through East and Central Texas to inform the public about the AG office and gauge support for a possible gubernatorial run. He toured with his wife Bitsy, Paul Brashear and Steve Van.
Commissioners Court completed a review of tax rolls placing 5 to 6 million dollars of previously unrendered property on the Comanche County rolls. No land value increases were made and the new property avoids raising the current 1.10 dollar per hundred evaluation. The total on the rolls now exceeds 29 to 30 million in taxable value, enhancing the county’s existing roughly 24 million.
The Commissioners plan to reevaluate county property values up to 29 to 30 million dollars to fairly distribute taxes. They aim to equalize existing unrendered property and adjust assessments without outside appraisers. The Board will meet Tuesday July 19 at 9 00 o clock to hear tax business from interested residents.
Arthur Clark of Athens Bricks Company announced organizational changes affecting Wes-Tex Clay Products Corporation in De Leon. Arvin Johnson shifts to De Leon in 1957, now vice president of production for Athens Brick Company overseeing Athens, Mooringsport, and Wes-Tex plants.
Betty Terrill reports the 63rd Peach and Melon Festival will add four acres behind the roping arena for parking. Eddie Lindley leads as overall chairman with Bodie Weaver vice chair and Betty Terrill secretary. The committee lists booth sales, tractor pull, parade and other assignments.
Eleven contestants vie for the festival queen title at DeLeon as 100 ticket sales qualify each candidate. A July tea opened the contest with sponsors from local clubs and organizations, and a drawing for merchandise prizes will be held August 6 at the Festival Stage.
