Busy De Leon residents praised for cooperation as the Peach and Melon Festival Committee plans the annual event for July 30 to August 4. Rain hoped for irrigation relief amid heat. Boy Scouts depart for Philmond, while the Little Miss De Leon contest opens to five year olds in the district with festival office registration at 893 6600.

Twelve Girls Compete in Peach and Melon Festival Queen Race

Twelve candidates including Brenda Cox Julie Andress Janet Higginbottom Haven Eisenrich Suzanna Hanson Elsa Villanueva Becky Ward Joy Morris Gaytha Frost Lisa Walker Cathy Bruton and Janet Paul compete for the Peach and Melon Festival Queen title. A party gave each girl tickets and rules. each must sell 100 dollars in tickets to qualify for the revue on July 30 with out of town judges. The current queen Donna Nowlin has statewide recognition.

Cattle Shootings Reported in Sidney Area

According to Comanche County sheriff's deputies five head of cattle owned by Bob Loyd at Sidney were shot during the past week, four on the weekend and one earlier. A Gustine merchant reported shoplifting a tape. An incident Monday morning.

Comanche resident linked to highway threats and arrests

A Comanche resident allegedly stopped a truck driver on Highway 36 east of Comanche and threatened to shoot. He was arrested, jailed, and later freed on bond, with plans to file counter charges against the driver. Local deputies aided Odessa police in recovering $80,000 in jewels stolen from an Odessa resident, leading to multiple arrests including a Brownwood felony warrant, and arrests in Comanche and Odessa.

County to Lose State Funds for Roads in Texas Budget Veto

Texas Governor Clements vetoed 7,376,374 dollars for the 1981 fiscal year HB 558, cutting Comanche County’s rural road repair aid by 31,804.77 and reducing maintenance and construction on local roads and bridges. Other area counties face similar losses, with Brown, Bosque, Callahan, Coleman, Coryell, Eastland, Erath, Hood, Hamilton, Lampasas, McCulloch, Llano, Mills, San Saba, and Stephens each seeing substantial reductions in state motor fuel tax allocations slated for September 1979 for the 1980 year.

ACP sign-up opens July 16 for 1979 program at ACS office

The second ACP sign-up runs July 16 to July 25 with applications reviewed July 26 by County ASCS Committee. Activities include constructing wells and storage for livestock water, installing pipelines, water impoundment reservoirs, reorganizing irrigation, shaping waterways, and brush control. Brush rules added to the 1979 handbook include elm hackberry and oak removal, mesquite control, rootplowing, rootraking, bulldozing scrub oak, and related methods.

De Leon Police Dept reports June arrests and activity

City police chief Rodney Jeanis notes in June three arrests for public intoxication, two for disorderly conduct, seven for failure to appear and one burglary. The department handled 157 calls, issued 17 citations and logged 5078 miles. Over the weekend four more arrests occurred two for public intoxication and two for possession of marijuana. Ontario jail holds the marijuana arrestees. July totals show 12 citations, two marijuana arrests, four public intoxication cases and one criminal mischief. Financial constraints limit new applications to needs-based review.

Hospital Board Acts On Tax Roll Rules In July Meeting

De Leon Hospital Board met July 9 and passed two resolutions to comply with HB 1060. The first keeps family vehicles on the school district tax roll for 1979 by choice of local authorities. The second makes Article 1 HB 1060 effective for 1980 and future years, allowing landowners to value land for agriculture or current value, with unanimous adoption.

Veterans loan limit raised to twenty thousand dollars

As of June 13 the statutory maximum on Veterans Land Board loans increased from 15000 to 20000 dollars. The 5 percent down payment becomes 1000 dollars and the semi annual payment 630 dollars. Applications valid for 90 days instead of 120. Any transaction not closed by June 13 1979 can now be processed.

New Maxi Purchase Limit For Veteran Land Deals

The policy sets a $20,000 maximum for veteran land purchases. If closed before June 13 the sale counts as one time participation for a veteran. Pending cases not committed by June 13 will be auto committed up to $20,000 if the price exceeds $15,000, based on appraisal. Additional contiguous acreage from the same seller may be added when the price is $15,000 to reach $20,000. Veterans with value applications in hand need not reapply. changes can be made on existing forms.

Annual Meeting For SWPGA To Be Held July 20

The 1979 Southwestern Peanut Growers Association annual meeting will be at the Hilton Inn in Austin on Friday July 20. Morning sessions from 10:00 to about noon cover association operations and peanut price support. producers only after noon. At 1:30 p.m. handlers and buyers meet to review 1979 Crop USDA regulations and marketing procedures with SWPGA and Texas State ASCS staff. James Neal invites all peanut growers to attend the 10:00 a.m. session.
