Peanut Princess Contest Set For Saturday Night

Eight Comanche County young ladies are entered in the Comanche Jaycees sponsored Peanut Princess Contest this Saturday July 8 starting at 8:00 p m in the Comanche High School Auditorium. Contestants and sponsors include Vicki Lynn Scott Hathcock Furniture and Appliance D Lana Wilkerson Specialty Leasing Sherry Nowlin KCOM Carolyn Day Farm Bureau Sally Herrera ESA Sorority Lucy Gutierrez Cockerham Golden Arrow Shell Rulene Payne Livingston Florist Carol Jo Shoemaker FaM Bank. Judges evaluate talent bathing suit and evening gown with each girl giving a short peanut industry statement. Master of ceremonies is Ronnie Boston immediate past president and pat Clendenin will give a welcome Marty Gore Dancers perform between contest sections. The Comanche County winner advances to the Texas Peanut Queen Contest August 19 in Eastland. Last Saturday July 1 Jaycee Wives hosted a Coke party for contestants in the Hospitality Room of the Comanche National Hank. Jaycees in charge Hershel Strawn Gayle Graham Elton Swindle.

Rainy Fourth Brings Farmers Hope and Peach Melon Plans

Rainfall reached up to one and a half inches by noon Tuesday aiding farmers in De Leon economy. De Leon representatives Lana Wilkerson Carol Jo Shoemaker Sherry Nowlin and Sally Herrera praise the rain and invite friends to the Comanche County Peanut Princess Contest and peach Melon Festival in four weeks for a strong community celebration.

Government Spending Cost Comanche County $33 000 Daily

The Tax Foundation estimates the national budget of over $246 billion for the year starting July 1 will cost Comanche County residents about $33,000 per day. Local figures show $2.82 per day per person, with defense dominating the tax burden. Breakdown: $368 of every $1,000 paid by a local family goes to defense, $327 to social welfare, $99 interest, $85 health, and $54 transportation and commerce.

Comanche County Faces Worst Grass Fire of Season

Comanche County suffered its largest grass fire of the current dry season, burning hundreds of acres in the Newburg Shiloh area last Tuesday. Firefighters from Comanche De Leon and Dublin, aided by locals, battled 100 degree heat for about 10 hours, with damage limited to grasses and fences per Fire Marshal Dale Nowlin.

Mrs. Altha Wilkerson Retires From Locke and Wilkerson

Altha Wilkerson retires from Locke and Wilkerson Insurance Agency effective July 1 after selling her interest to the Locke partner. She has long served De Leon and Comanche County communities through church, school board service as the first woman member, and civic activities. She and husband Jim Wilkerson plan to reside in De Leon after selling their Downing Community home and continuing tax work with Mr. Locke during tax season.
