Summertime is here and warm temperatures point to a Peach and Melon Festival from July 30 to August 4. Organizers and clubs begin projects for the event with many individuals volunteering long hours. Queen candidates will start selling tickets after the July 10 party to kick things off.
Sheriff Shilo Garmon said the past weekend saw fewer incidents with only two jailed on DWI charges and one for public intoxication. All arrests occurred in the Lake Proctor area.
The record lists daily high and low temperatures from June 26 to July 30 with highs from 93 to 97 and lows around 68 to 73. It also notes rainfall amounts for June 26 and 27, total rainfall for June, and the total rainfall for 1979 to date at 22.92 inches.
The Treasury issues 500 million Anthony dollar coins on July 2 through the Federal Reserve Banks to banks, businesses, and the public. The Mint forecasts cost savings and notes the coin features Susan B Anthony on the obverse and Apollo 11s eagle on the reverse. Frank Gasparro designed both sides.
Southern Savings and Loan Association celebrates twenty years of growth since opening on July 1, 1959 by Roy H. Simmons and a group of mid-Texans. From a $50,000 first day deposits and 4 percent interest to assets over $100 million, the firm expanded with branches in Comanche De Leon Goldthwaite Lampasas and Brady and formed Southern Savings Life Insurance in 1977 to offer mortgage protection. The Brownwood office moved to a new location in 1974 with a second floor added by 1978 to improve service.
Barbara Hargrove joins De Leon Chamber of Commerce, affiliated with Century 21 Commonwealth in Dublin. A 1967 De Leon High School graduate, she path to real estate includes training at Century’s Irwindale HQ, top listings in May and top sales in June, with prior work at Southwestern Bell and Texas Department of Agriculture. She and husband Gerald have two children, Glenn and Jennifer, and she serves the local Order of the Eastern Star and First Baptist Church, aiming to boost De Leon business.
Festival offers ten 10 by 10 foot booth spaces under the shed for arts and crafts for sale during the festival week. Each booth costs $50 for the full week and is limited to crafts and art only. Contact the festival office at 893-6600 or 2015 to reserve. a watchman will be provided.
De Leon School Board moved on tax matters at the June 26 meeting. They adopted Article 1 HB 1060 to tax roll classification and land valuation options for 1980 and beyond by 5 to 1 vote. The longtime $3,000 homestead exemption for seniors was rescinded and replaced with a new $15,000 market value exemption, approved unanimously.
The Wilson Cats finished the season undefeated with 12 wins and no losses to claim the Little League championship. F & M Bank and Higginbotham's tied for second with seven wins each. All Star selections include Larry Simpson, Jerry Frori, and Bradley.
Gerald Frank will coach the Wilson Cats all star team with assistants Mike Richardson Donnie Ravenshine Kenneth Wilson and Larry Simpson. The team faces Ranger July 5 6 and 7 and will compete in tournaments at Eastland German and Dublin with players including Michael Gonzales Leslie Grace Clayton Hudson Richie Garcia Dwayne Morris Brian Boen Brian Weaver Kenneth McKillip Kyle Lewis Michael Rubio James Mathis and Stephen Forrest.
The 1979 Peach and Festival runs July 30 to August 4 with the theme In The Good Ole Days. Lannes Callison chairs, Lanny Butler is vice chair, John Pickens treasurer, and Sherman Sides assists. A long list of volunteers, duchess invitations, and events including tractor pull carnival Grapevine Opry Mo Bandy Joe Paul Nichols are planned. Festival office hours are 8:30 to 5 daily, with phone numbers 893-6600 and 893-2015 for information.
New postal standards take effect July 15 restricting mail sizes. Cards under 0.003 inch thick and envelopes under 3.5 inches high or 5 inches long will be returned. Oversized envelopes over 6-1/8 by 11 inches incur a seven cent surcharge if one ounce or less. delays drop when appropriate postage is applied.
The Texas Summer Reading Club at De Leon Library is underway with only 28 members this year, down from over 100 last year. Titled In Search of Texas Treasures, it invites children in grades 1 through 6 to join. contact Mrs. Preston at the city library for details.
