The 25th Annual Comanche County Junior Livestock Auction grossed a record 99,961.10 over two days led by steers, hogs, and lambs. De Leon FFA Drives Top Honors At County Livestock Show
The 48th Annual County Livestock Show at Comanche Livestock Center saw De Leon FFA and 4H members claim major titles. Leslie Morris led with the grand champion breeding goat and reserve, while Brad Bettis won market swine. Show winners also include Marlin Priddy and Melinda Owen in showmanship, as judges from A&M and Tarleton weighed in.

Rabid Skunk Reported In City Limits
A skunk shot by a De Leon resident in his yard Sunday night January 16 was confirmed rabid after testing. The animal contacted two dogs. one vaccinated and re vaccinated, the other euthanized. Dr. Michael Burk notes two rabid animals locally and discusses vaccination and monitoring options. This is the first rabid skunk in about three years.

Fred Williams Named President of Farmers and Merchants Bank
Fred D. Williams was promoted to President of the Farmers and Merchants Bank in De Leon last Thursday January 20. He joined the bank 18 years ago, arriving from Abilene in April 1964 to serve as Assistant Vice President, then VP in 1965 and EVP in 1980. Williams has led local civic efforts as Citizen of the Year 1969, and as longtime chamber and festival committee leader.
New Programs In Curriculum Of De Leon Public Schools
De Leon Public Schools have added several programs including Gifted and Talented for grades 4 through 6, selected by testing, directed by Mrs. Melba Shelby. The group, named Strivers, meets weekly to develop research skills, study communication modes, and publish a student newspaper. The district also expanded remedial reading and math, migrants programs with micro-computers, and a Pharmacy Bank of software discs funded per student. Resource rooms assist learners with problems, and early childhood special education serves 3 to 5 year olds. An ESL program shows early success with kindergartners and first graders taught by a team, while grades 2-8 are taught by Mrs Frances Danson. four ESL students have exited since.
