Smith given life term for 1976 murder in pharmacy raid
Richard D. Smith received a life sentence from 220th District Court Judge Andrew Campbell in Hamilton after pleading guilty to murder in the 1976 burglary at Ted Durham’s Comanche Pharmacy. Previously, he was sentenced to death for capital murder, a conviction overturned by the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals. The retrial occurred last December after venue changes, and Smith has been jailed since December 7 awaiting transfer to Huntsville to begin the life sentence under a plea deal with prosecutors.
