Locals Sweep County Junior Livestock Show Top Honors
De Leon FFA and 4 H members dominated the Comanche County Junior Livestock Show held in Comanche. They swept Grand Champion and Reserve Champion Steers with Jeff Brinson winning the top steer and Jeff Whiteside close behind. First-place winners included Ronnie Fritz, Buzzy Mahan, Jeff Whiteside, Toby Mahan, Bugsy Mahan, Jill Miller, Neal McDaniel, Robert Gilder, Gary Dodd, Gatha Frost, Elton Cogburn, Ricky Morgan, Eddie Hight, Buddy Williams, and Buddy Berry. Showmanship awards went to Eddie Hight and Buzzy Mahan. Complete results are on page 6.

Rites Held For Bill Brown Jr in De Leon
William Morris Brown Jr., 47, died Sunday in De Leon Hospital after a long illness. Funeral services were held at the First United Methodist Church with a graveside service at Pioneer Cemetery in Graham. He was born in Wynnewood Oklahoma and lived in De Leon five years, prior in Graham ten years. He served in World War II and was a longtime Texas Electric Service Co. manager. He was a director of the West Texas Chamber of Commerce and De Leon Chamber, and a Lions Club member. He married Ann Carlyle in 1944. Survivors include his wife, a son Rex Robert, a daughter Cheryl Ponder, his mother, a brother, and a grandchild. Pallbearers and honorary pallbearers listed.

Charles W. Taylor was elected president of the Farmers and Merchants Bank of De Leon following Elmon Kerby’s retirement. At 33 he has been executive vice president since March 1963 and previously worked at Citizens National Bank Abilene First National Waco and First National Abilene. He is active in local affairs as a church member, Chamber of Commerce leader and director of several banks.
