The W H Smith family home suffered heavy damage in a pre-dawn fire aided by strong winds and freezing temps. Across the street Donnie Nowlin served coffee to volunteer firefighters working in shifts amid the cold. Two local volunteers said it was the hardest blaze they had fought.
