The Free Press’s first edition went to bed around 5 am with minor ads missing. De Leon advertisers supported the launch as Quarte rback Club’s banquet featured Rick Mason and Stan Mauldin. Bearcats eye district play as Randy Hardin and Mike Huddiston recover. PAR Country Club vandalism noted and police asked to investigate.

De Leon Bearcats honored at annual football banquet

The De Leon Quarterback Club held its banquet for the 1970 Bearcat football team at the Elementary School Cafeteria. Speakers Rick Mason and Stan Mauldin shared college football insights. Awards went to David Gilder, Herman Hardin, Brad Koonce, and David Caruth. Milton Smith elected QB Club president for 1971.

Old De Leon landmark Terrill estate destroyed by fire

On December 22 a historic home at the corner of Rey nosa and Moseley Streets in De Leon burned to the ground leaving only a fireplace and charred foundation. Eyewitness Bam Morris reported waking to flames and danger urged occupants to flee barefoot. Fire crews contained the blaze quickly due to a still night. The Terrill home, built about 65 years ago by Taylor Higginbotham for his bride, passed through several owners and was admired for its interior artistry before neglect and vandalism left it a shell prior to the fire.

Local F and M Bank Leads In Four County Deposits

Farmers and Merchants Bank led four county banks in deposits for the final call of 1971 with a gain of 1 270 671 15. Comanche County deposits rose over 2 million in Q4 with the local bank supplying more than half the gain. Loans fell by over 1 million as of December 31 with the De Leon bank leading county banks in loans. Total deposits reached 27 383 498 70 with three banks up and loans totaling 13 104 910 85.

Harvested acreage reported on 995 farms totals 1,833.4 acres with 71,432,186 pounds of peanuts threshed. Average production per acre on 995 farms is 1,892 pounds or 46.4 bushels, based on 1,247 farms with production data and 1,088 farms not reporting.

Directors Named Industrial Foundation Holds Meeting

Thepe Leon Industrial Foundation met Monday, Jan. 1 at Farmers and Merchants Bank. Charles Taylor and Terry Irwin were elected directors. Outgoing directors were C. M. Caraway II, president, and W. H. Smith Jr., secretary treasurer. A new president will be elected next meeting. Smith reviewed the year's activities and the foundation's financial status. Members were informed of possible industrial prospects.

De Leon Event Guides Texas Inauguration Week

Ham Locke reports De Leon citizens will attend the Texas inauguration of Lt. Governor elect Ben Barnes on Tuesday January 19. Wayne Newton entertainment and a victory dinner are planned plus a De Leon High School Band parade. Austin balls feature Russ Morgan Buck Owens and more with Feb banquet plans ahead.

De Leon FFA4H Project Show Highlights County Event

The De Leon FFA4H project show runs all day at the De Leon Riding Club Barn. Seven hog classes, three steer classes, and two sheep classes will be judged starting at 9 AM for hogs and 1 PM for steers. Frank Whitley of Tavelton State Live stock Farm serves as judge with about seventy students participating.

Local Resident Injured In Auto Wreck

Mrs Judy Barnes Free man of De Leon and her two daughters Tammy and Kim were in good condition at Stephenville Hospital after a two car collision near Comanche Rt 377 at 8 30 p m Saturday One man Kenneth Shifer 47 of Comanche died at Stephenville Hospital and another driver Royce Anson Brantley 47 of Comanche was in satisfactory condition at De Leon Hospital as Highway Patrolman Joe Wilie reported.

Benefit Dance For Sick Child Saturday at City Hall

A benefit community dance will be held Saturday night at 7:30 in City Hall for Jennie Gayle Sides, 22 month old daughter of Jimmy and Martha Sides. The Establishment will provide music. Tickets cost $2.00 and are sold at Farmers and Merchants Bank and Frank Texaco Station. Proceeds help cover medical expenses.

Car Crash Splits Brantley Vehicle in Two

The accident happened as Brantley, traveling west, tried a left turn into a driveway. Mrs. Freeman's eastbound car struck Brantley, and the impact split the Brantley vehicle in two.
