Gayle Wilkerson invites De Leon residents to the FFA and 4-H stock show this Saturday January 13 with quality animals and showmanship on display The county show follows January 18 and 19 promising more highlights for animal enthusiasts Also noted are a Monday night American Agriculture Movement meeting and plans for a NASA moon rock display at the high school with a visiting scientist plus congratulations to Bearcats named to the all area football team
The De Leon Livestock Show is set for Saturday January 13 at the Riding Club barn. Swine showings start 8 30 a m with breeding gifts then market swine and after lunch breeding goats dairy heifers beef heifers and market steers are shown. About seventy FFA and 4 H youths will exhibit 180 animals with 18 steers 9 beef heifers 7 dairy heifers 21 lambs 97 gilts and barrows and 17 goats.
A large audience at City Hall heard about forming a peanut growers cooperative. The Texas Peanut Growers Association eyes 150 to 200 members with directors elected in March and at large representation from South Texas. A ten dollar membership, affidavit and ten signer requirement to place a name on the ballot, and a January 11 Southwestern Peanut Growers Association meeting were announced. Dr. Bill Black discussed marketing needs, government influence on peanuts, and the drive to build a stronger producer market power amid foreign investment concerns.
NASA plans moon rock displays in De Leon schools in January after a film and slide show at De Leon High School by Tom Hill, senior aerospace scientist from NASA. James B. Asmus will deliver the samples to classrooms, with vault security when not on display.
L T Lewis the newly elected Justice of the Peace for Precinct 5 began his term January 1 1979 from a new office space at 603 Fannin De Leon shifting from the former City Hall area after the city separated the JP and city judge posts Lewis criticized the move as a money measure and said the county may rent City Hall space while remodeling findings show plans to keep justice and law enforcement offices in City Hall with ongoing discussions among county commissioners and city officials about final arrangements
The first baby of 1979 was born at De Leon Hospital January 4 at 11 35 pm. Lucas Jack Akard weighed 7 pounds 11 ounces and measured 20 inches. Parents Jack and Sylvia Akard live in Comanche with daughter Lindsay nearly two. Jack works at Higginbotham's Lumber in Comanche. Grandparents include J L Roberson Jr and Mrs C C Brewer of Comanche, with great grandparents J L Roberson Sr of Hamilton Carl Miller of Gustine and Henry Akard of Lubbock.
Faith Chapel on the old German highway will hold revival services from Sunday night January 14 through Friday night January 19. Services start at 6:00 p.m. on Sunday and 7:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Rev. Guvnn Fuller of Wichita Falls will conduct the revival. Jim Fitzhugh is the pastor. Everyone is welcome.
