Last Rites Held for William J. Braswell

William Jackson Braswell 85 of De Leon Arkansas born, died January 2 1955 at local hospital after long community life. Survived by wife Alice Ann, four daughters Clara Stanley Ora Gilder Alta Parker Viola Wilson, four sons Joe Jewell Calvin Clarence, 34 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren. Funeral at First Baptist Church De Leon January 3 at 2 30 with Rev. Frank Skaggs and Rev. Tommy L. Austin. Interment De Leon Cemetery. pallbearers listed. arrangements by Sharp Nabors.

Hico News Review Sold to Ernest V Meador

The News Review of Hico changes hands from Roland L Holford to Ernest V Meador effective Dec 3 with Meador and his wife taking over daily operations. Meador has worked at the paper for nine years and will be aided by his wife while Mrs Holford remains associated as co publisher after her retirement as postmaster in 1941.

De Leon Rider Earns Statewide Cowgirl Honor at Fort Worth Expo

Terrill from De Leon named among twelve rodeo riders chosen for the statewide Cowgirl Contest at the Southwestern Exposition and Fat Stock Show in Fort Worth. Eight performances feature roping and barrel races as part of the event. Terrill is sponsored by the De Leon Community Club and has represented De Leon at Stamford Cow Boy Reunion. William T Foster 68 Dies. Rites Held in De Leon

William Thomas Foster 68 a MK&T railroad employee died Saturday January 1 at the local hospital and was buried from First Baptist Church Sunday with Rev Tommy L Austin officiating. Interment at De Leon Cemetery with Higginbotham Funeral directors in charge. He had been in ill health for three months and lived in De Leon 25 years. He married Essie D Rine on December 24 1907. Survived by widow three daughters nine grandchildren five great grandchildren two sons preceded him in death. numerous relatives and railroad friends. Pallbearers and honorary pallbearers listed. members of the MK&T railroad noted. He was a Baptist and the church choir provided music. The Free Press extends sympathy.

New Editor to Take Charge of De Leon Kree Press

Mr and Mrs Jack Stricklin of Brownfield will move to De Leon to assume control of the Kree Press. They will occupy the Williams home owned by Mrs May S Whaley and plan a return trip to Brownfield Friday. The family includes three children ages 17 6 and 12 and they are members of the Church of Christ. De Leon extends a welcome and good wishes.

De Leon Day at Fat Stock Show February 2 1955

The Southwestern Exposition and Fat Stock Show designates February 2 1955 as De Leon Day with a De Leon delegation led by F D Hicks. About 100 cattlemen may attend from De Leon to view rodeo performances and be recognized. Barbara Terrill will perform and Helen Harmon will be honored as De Leon Sweetheart.

Farmers & Merchants National Bank of De Leon Celebrates 50th Anniversary

The Farmers and Merchants National Bank of De Leon marked its 50th anniversary on January 1 with 448 attendees including Roy Harvey praised for 50 years of service. Local and visiting bankers attended, flowers were sent from state banks and the Chase National Bank of New York, and a gold pen desk set was presented to Harvey. The event drew many out of town guests and highlighted bank history such as the first $5 bill on display by W S Whaley.

Burglars loot Rising Star store for clothing

In Rising Star on December 39 burglars broke into Nichols Cleaners between Wednesday night and Thursday morning. They stole 20 suits at 50 dollars each, 150 pairs of slacks, and several dozen sport shirts worth between 2000 and 2500 dollars. No burglar insurance existed. Entry was gained by crowbar and no fingerprints were found. The theft appears planned by locals familiar with the shop and timed after city rounds.

O K Barnett born December six 1901 in Chico Texas died December thirty 1954 at Baylor Hospital after brain tumor surgery. Services held December thirty one in Chico Rev Griffin Fort Worth. Burial arrangements by Bert Hawkins Funeral Home Bridgeport. Survived by widow Edna Mae Barnett and several siblings and nieces nephews. He owned O K Barnett Grocery and Market in Leon since November 11 1954 and was uncle to Paul Chesser of this city.

Infant Daughter of Theron Flatt Died on Christmas Day

Hollie Sjuan Flatt, infant daughter of Theron Eldon Flatt and Ruth Alline Flatt, died at De Leon Hospital on December 25, 1954. She leaves the parents of De Leon, a maternal grandmother Mrs Hollie Holland of Dublin, paternal grandparents, two aunts Iris Hughes of Dublin and Juanita Fuller of Gorman, and uncle Travis Flatt of Corpus Christi. Graveside services were held December 26 at 11:30 in Old Dublin Cemetery with Father Clark officiating.
