County Officials Begin New Terms In Comanche County

Officials sworn in January 1 at the Comanche County courthouse include new County Treasurer Hazel Carouth who succeeds retirement. She has prior service as deputy treasurer and work in county attorney and county judge offices. Also starting new term is Justice of the Peace Precinct 5 L T Lewis, a longtime trucker and fertilizer distributor. Other officials continuing include County Judge Johnny Livingston, County Clerk Betty Conway, District Clerk Ruth Page, 220th District Attorney Leslie Vance, 220th District Judge Andrew Campbell, and Precinct 4 County Commissioner Derwin Nabors.

Growers Barbeque Meeting in De Leon City Hall

Texas peanut growers are invited to a barbecue hosted by local American Agriculture members. Arvil Setzler will cook. Dr. Bill Black of Texas A&M will speak on cooperative startups. Topics include price supports and a cooperative, with USDAs February 15 announcement. Seminar set for January 8 at 6:00 p.m. in De Leon City Hall.

Mrs Kimmell Becomes De Leon's First Woman City Judge

Mrs Myrtle Kimmell is named the first woman city judge for De Leon, effective January 1, 1979. The Robinson Springs alumna and wife of the late Alvis Kimmell has four sons, eight grandchildren, and a great granddaughter. She will hear cases Tuesday and Thursday mornings at City Hall upstairs near the police department.

Allen To Operate Keith's Exxon In De Leon

Exxon station at 600 Texas Street formerly Wilkersons in De Leon will be operated by Keith Allen as Keiths Exxon. Keith and his dad Dale Allen own the business. Dale is district manager for Riverside Chemical Company in De Leon.

De Leon Sees New Hopeful Business Couple

Keith Allen, born in Balmorhea and raised in Texas, grew up in Elk City and studied at Panhandle State College. After seven years as branch manager at Agrico in Guymon and time with Riverside in Edna, he moved with his wife Sheila to De Leon last March with their five year old Jody in a Baptist family. Keith calls De Leon a fantastic place to live and aims to contribute as a local businessman and community asset.

The USDA releases final regulations for the 1979 peanut crop establishing a national poundage quota and national acreage allotment to be proclaimed and apportioned among states, detailing the framework for market controls and distribution.

1978 Dry Year Records At Lake Proctor County

County rainfall data from the Corps station at Lake Proctor shows 1978 as the third driest on record with 24.50 inches for the year. Only 1977 and 1975 were drier, and last week contributed 0.25 inches. December totals and weekly temperature highs and lows are noted.

Creative Skills Decorate McCleskey Home in De Leon

A tour of W. C. and Ila McCleskey’s hillside home near Onion Valley outlines their craft talents. W. C. polishes rocks for belts and cabochons, cuts thin slices for butterflies, and makes cactus displays. Ila nurtures African violets, flowers, and needlework while collecting arrowheads. They buy rocks from area shows, favor Brazilian agate and petrified wood, and earned first place in Dublin 1977 for polished slabs.

De Leon FFA and 4 H held livestock show January 14 with Grand Champions listed. Comanche County Livestock Show top De Leon winners named and showmanship awards given. Auction sales reached $58,066.38 across 216 animals. Snow fell January 21, 1977. Peanut producers approve marketing quotas. many farmers traveled to Washington to discuss prices. Texas Peanut Producers Board sues the government over Segregation 3 peanuts. Aflatoxin poisoning blamed for mallard duck deaths at Lake Proctor. Bennie B. Davis named Outstanding County Supervisor Fm H A at Waco. Stacy Smith wins Cub Scouts Pinewood Derby. 25 boys participate. Eight grade Kittens win 10-A district tournament in Dublin. Peanut crop quotas set for 1979 national and state acreages

The record states a 1,596,000,000 ton minimum peanut quota and a 1,614,000 acre national peanut allotment for 1979. It lists state allocations Georgia 530,393 acres Texas 358,063 Alabama 216,190 North Carolina 167,870 Oklahoma 138,290 and Virginia 104,837 acres. De Leon Businesses Targeted by Night Burglars

Three De Leon businesses were hit late last Thursday night or Friday morning. S and M Grocery at Highways 6 and 16 was entered through a side window between 11:30 p.m. and 5:58 a.m. with cigarettes and over $100 stolen. Fincher Feed’s front door lock was broken but nothing taken. Newman’s Laundry on Sipe Springs Road was vandalized with attempts to grab money from a dryer box.
