Census Workers Seeking Short Term Interview in Comanche

Interested applicants may be interviewed Wednesday February 27 at 2 00 p m in the Comanche County courtroom Comanche for a written exam The census taker job lasts three to six weeks and requires physical fitness to stand for long periods.

Rural traffic accidents in Comanche County in January 1980

The Texas Highway Patrol investigated thirteen rural traffic accidents in Comanche County during January 1980. No deaths occurred and two people were injured. District 6A totals show 446 accidents with 22 deaths and 237 injuries this year, compared with 517 accidents, 16 deaths, and 258 injuries last year.

De Leon Bands Launch Bulb Fund Drive for trip

The De Leon Bands begin a fundraising campaign Tuesday taking orders for lightbulb assortments to raise money for equipment and a trip. They urge community support as band members solicit help.

Voting In Process On Beef Research And Information Order

Balloting began Tuesday on the 1980 Beef Research and Information Order with voting through Friday February 22. In Texas 40 320 cattlemen registered a drop from 1977 while Comanche County had 476 registered. If approved a Beef Board of up to 68 producers would be appointed by the Secretary of Agriculture to run the program with six Texas board members and six alternates. Assessments start at 20 cents per 100 dollars for two years rising to 50 cents thereafter and exemptions apply to high priced animals. Refunds possible within sixty days of sale. order could terminate by a ten percent referendum or majority vote.

Ray Harvey Profile Featured in De Leon Chamber Spotlight

De Leon native Ray Harvey is spotlighted by the Chamber of Commerce. Born August 5, 1911, he built a long career with De Leon Peanut Company and Durant plant, served in WWII, and retired as De Leon plant manager in 1978. He served on city commission, hospital board, and remains active as a deacon and Sunday School teacher.

Volunteers will call on homes offering three pack 125 volt lightbulbs. Options include six 60 watt bulbs or six 100 watt bulbs or a mixed set of two 60, two 75, and two 100 watt bulbs. Also offered are three way bulbs and an outdoor floodlight. Buy to support the band’s goal.

The Senior Class is sponsoring an Outsiders Basketball Tournament at the De Leon gym from Thursday to Saturday with teams from surrounding towns. Four games will be played Thursday and Friday nights starting at 5 30 p m and Saturday evening games begin at 7 00 p m.

De Leon City Plans April 5 Election for Mayor and Commissioner

On February 12 the De Leon City Council adopted an election order to fill the expiring terms of Mayor Doyle Smith and Commissioner Bettie Hall. The election will be held in City Hall on Saturday, April 5 with Dr Terrill H Sharp as election judge and assistants Wilson Kirk Eula Weaver and Odette Bell. The City Secretary will be absentee clerk for absentee balloting. Absentee voting runs March 17 to April 1 at the city office. Absentee ballots mailed in are due by 10:00 a.m. April 3.

Garmon Seeks a Segre Term As Sheriff

Comanche County Sheriff W G Shilo Garmon seeks a second term after serving since January 1 1977. He was a deputy sheriff for four years and a city patrolman for five. He and his wife Elizabeth Berry reside at the county jail in Comanche while keeping a De Leon home. His three sons Kelly Kevin and Kurtis hold jobs in San Angelo Eastland and Brownwood.

Date Set for Peanut Meeting February 28

February 28 at 7 00 p.m a meeting will be held in the community room at the F M Bank in De Leon for all peanut producers and other interested persons. The meeting will be conducted by Mike Huddleston Nematologist with the Texas Department of Agriculture and John Ed Brothers Soil Consultant with Brookside Laboratories in Stephenville. Infrared aerial photography slides photographed just prior to the harvest of the 1979 peanut crop will be shown. These slides will illustrate stress to plants from nematodes moisture and disease. De Leon Students to Take First Texas Assessment Tests

Fifth and ninth graders in De Leon Independent School District will participate in Texas' inaugural statewide testing program in March 1980. About 500,000 students statewide will test reading, writing, and math during February 25 to March 12 with each test lasting 40 to 60 minutes. District scores will be reported publicly in May or June. individual scores stay with students, parents, and involved staff. Third grade will join next year. Westinghouse DataScore Systems will administer and secure test materials under contract, with results reported by campus and district boards.

Future Farmers of America Week Promotes Agricultural Careers

This week February 16 23 marks Future Farmers of America Week nationwide. The FFA, founded 1928, operates in all 50 states plus Puerto Rico Guam and the Virgin Islands. February rebates to Texas cities total over 36 million

State Comptroller Bullock says Texas cities will receive more than 36 million dollars in February rebates from the optional one percent city sales tax. The February allocation surpasses last year by about 11 million, reflecting improved deposit procedures. Cities listed include De Leon, Cross Plains, Dublin, Breckenridge, Brownwood, Granbury, Mason, Ranger, and San Saba among others with varied rebate amounts.
