Caution urged on flying kites near power lines in Texas

Texas Electric Service Company urged parents to warn children about kite safety near electric wires. Manager L D Stewart stressed the dangers of metallic cord, metal kite frames, and flying in rain, and noted past safe practices by local youngsters. The company will provide posters for schools.

Col Paul L Neal promoted to brigadier general in U S Army

Fort Monroe Virginia announces the Senate confirmation of Col Paul L Neal of De Leon and Dallas for temporary brigadier general. A veteran of World War I II and Korea, he served as Signal Officer Eighth Army in Korea and later with Japan Logistical Command, now assigned to Office Chief of Army Field Forces. He is a Dallas resident, with wife Kathryn Dunlap and daughter Mrs James Cleaver, and has contributed to Army communications development.

Jackson Attends White's Auto Show Across Texas Stores

R E Jackson owner operator of White Auto Store in Delcon returned from Wichita Falls where he attended White's Auto Stores Spring and Summer Merchandise Show. More than 100 manufacturers displayed wares for homemakers with items from Leonard refrigerators to General Electric appliances and Black and Decker tools. The banquet drew dealer owners, guests, 125 White's Auto Stores staff, and about 100 factory reps from Texas New Mexico Oklahoma and Kansas.

Brothers Serving in the Armed Forces

Brothers Billy and Bobby Wilkerson, sons of Mr and Mrs J R Wilkerson, are in service. Billy served twelve months in Korea with the 4th Infantry Division and is now at Fort Sill Oklahoma with the Enlisted Staff and Acuity Battery. Bobby, in the army since May 1953, is in Korea with the 46th Quartermaster Co 45th Infantry Thy APO 66 care San Francisco California. Billy was released February 9. He is married to the former Shir ley Winkles.

Mrs Azalea Elis Announces Candidacy for County Treasurer

Mrs Azalea Elis of 710 East Mills Street Comanche announces her bid for county treasurer. A Mills County native now long resident of Comanche County she is a former Higginbothams employee and now works at Baxters Place. She has four children including Airman Carl Ellis at Carswell AFB and Comanche High School sophomore Johnnie. She attends the First Baptist Church of Comanche.

Church Attendance Showing Increase

Attendance at several churches rose with 701 in Sunday School and Bible Study, 645 in Morning Worship, 191 in the service before Evening Worship, and 80 in Prayer Service. De Leon Raises 1387 in March of Dimes Drive

De Leon residents contributed 1387.48 to the March of Dimes Drive with Lex Shelby reporting the total and Joe Underhill continuing the local business under the same location. An anonymous farmer donated an additional 100, aiding De Leon to exceed its local average while the county overall missed its quota.

The Baptist Youth Rally will meet February 26 at the First Church in Comanche at 7:00 p.m. Fort Worth seminary students will present the program and all are urged to attend to help build the organization.

West Texas Dust Blows Through De Leon With High Wind

A west Texas dust storm swept through De Leon on Wednesday as loose, unfixed dust rose in gusts resembling March conditions. Visibility dropped to under a quarter mile at times.

Mrs Mitchell Tate Undergoes Surgery in Fort Worth

Mr and Mrs C G Tate received a call from their son Mitchell that his wife underwent surgery in Saint Josephs hospital in Fort Worth Friday. She had previously injured her right hand when a drawer closed on it and has been treated since. She was on the operating table seven hours and was reported to be doing nicely. Friends in De Leon regret the news and wish her a speedy recovery.

Seniors Honored at Baptist Women Banquet

The De Leon High School seniors were honored at a Valentine themed banquet by the First Baptist Church Women’s Missionary Society on Feb. 8. The event featured a skit Love Through the Ages with notes from Miss Shirley Bassett and others, a welcoming address by Mrs. R. D. Jones, and remarks from Mack Wofford. Reverend T. J. Sparkman opened the program with an invocation.

A H Caraway of De Leon was elected president of the Texas Shorthorn Breeders Association at its banquet in the Texas Hotel Fort Worth on February 4. Zollie Koonce of Desdemona was re-elected secretary treasurer and Bernard Friedlander of Tyler was named vice president.

W P Cox Passes Away in Houston

News received in De Leon reports W P Cox died in Houston Tuesday night. Body brought to De Leon by Higginbotham's ambulance. Funeral services set for Friday afternoon at the First Baptist Church. Full obituary to follow next week in the Free Press.

Mrs Loudermilk Announces Candidacy for County Treasurer

Ruth Loudermilk 40 declares for county treasurer with two sons Butch 13 and Tucker 11 at 404 North Page, Comanche. Husband Robert Loudermilk died in a 1942 San Diego aircraft accident. She is PTA worker and church member with three years bookkeeping at Kight's Gin.

Van Dyke Man Dies from Highway Car Collision

N O Reese of Van Dyke died at Comanche from injuries after a two vehicle wreck on the Comanche Highway late Tuesday. His wife suffered a broken hip and head injuries and is in critical condition at Comanche Hospital. The van truck driver, Robert W Moore of Dallas, was uninjured.

Mrs. Aston Dies at 72 in Terrill

Mrs Lula Aston passed away at her home in Terrill on January 3 at the age of 72. She was sister to Mrs W H Stringfellow and to Arthur and W F Warren. Reared in De Leon, she had lived here many years and leaves friends and relatives who regret her death.

Delton Nabors to Lead De Leon Salvation Army Drive

The Salvation Army Service Unit in De Leon organized the 1954 campaign with Delton Nabors as chair and Mrs. Charlene Terrell as co chair. Nabors named captains Arvel Setzler Max Foust Ralph Terrill and Garland Thomas to head the drive. The group notes prior welfare aid including eye glasses clothing food lodging medical care and medicine. They plan to raise 500 for 1954 and emphasize local help without red tape. Other agencies in San Antonio and local services may be used as needed.

Ranger Bulldogs Rout De Leon Bearcats in Conference Game

Ranger Bulldogs crushed the De Leon Bearcats 85 to 36 in the final conference game. The B team lost 41 to 39. Ranger will meet West Zone champions Feb 15 to 20 in the district tournament to determine the title.

Baby girl Patricia Gayle born to Mr. and Mrs. Moreland

Mr. and Mrs. George Moreland announce the birth of a daughter, Patricia Gayle, on Monday Feb. 8 at De Leon Hospital weighing 7 pounds 12 ounces. Grandparents are W. S. Moreland of De Leon and Ottis Leach of Plainview. The couple also have a 20 month old son, Norman Lee.
