Gayle Wilkerson notes De Leon Bearcats named to the Texas Sports Writers Association All State Team. Local teams in a strong season chase district titles as boys and girls prepare for Friday games with Dublin. Fire hydrants red white and blue mark Bicentennial year while town upgrades include new light posts and cable system remodel nearing completion.
The De Leon Bearcats beat Cross Plains 24 to 15 in points and then defeated Bangs 67 to 46 to move closer to the district championship. Daryl Ward led Cross Plains with 15 points, Craig Smith scored 27 for Bangs, while Stephen Decker and Ward contributed for De Leon. Two starters were sidelined with injuries as they prepare to host Dublin in a key district matchup.
The Proctor Reservoir Weather Station released a weather report detailing current conditions and short term outlook. Data includes temperature trends, humidity, wind patterns, and precipitation chances for the coming period.
An open meeting on creating water districts is set for 7 30 p m Thursday February 5 at the Comanche County Farm Bureau office with Garry Davis and Bill Wedemeyer presenting. A peanut production seminar by the Texas Agricultural Extension Service and county committees follows on February 6 in De Leon and Comanche with four Extension specialists leading sessions.
A major face lift for the De Leon TV cable system is underway. The upgrade adds channels from Waco Sweetwater Fort Worth and Dallas plus Civil Defense and local weather. Completion is 85 percent with full operation expected before March starts.
Local youth showcased steers and heifers at Fort Worth. Marlin Priddy won champion Shorthorn carcass steer and placed with Shorthorn and heifer entries. Joey Mahan earned multiple placings in the Junior Steer Show. Mark McKillip also placed with a Hereford steer, while Janell Straub and Floyd Stokes participated without placing.
The Kittens upset Cross Plains 32 to 0 with Terri Van Zandt scoring 28 and Kelly Mitchell 15 as guard talent led the team. They then beat Bangs 50 to 55 with Mitchell scoring 29 and Van Zandt 18 as they push District 10-A playoff bid.
Entries for De Leon include multiple exhibitors showing barrows on Friday February 6 with totals from Bryan Preston Tim Beaty Mark Beaty Tracey Reeves Mark Davis Abel Lopez Janell Straub Marlin Priddy and Rodger Coan. Dee Dee Nowlin has the lone lamb entry in the Lamb Show.
1976 license plate strips went on sale Monday February 2 at the Comanche County Tax Assessor-Collector's office. The strips attach to 1975 plates in the upper corner. Buyers should bring the three part renewal notice mailed by the Texas Highway Department. Strips will be sold at the tax office throughout February and March.
