The P-TA will hold a night session on Thursday February 10 at 7 30 p.m. in the high school auditorium. Gene Brewer Texas Highway Patrol Safety Officer speaks on Driver Education. Everyone invited especially Junior High and High School students. An executive meeting precedes at 7 00 p.m.
Joe Galbraith Scout Executive of the Comanche Trail Council met Friday with interested parents at the De Leon Methodist Church to discuss organizing a Cub Pack. The Methodist Men’s Club would sponsor the unit. Three training meetings are planned with a follow up on February 15 at 7:00 p.m. to finalize details and enroll the boys.
R H Patterson agent of De Leon staked a 3200 foot cable tool wildcat twelve miles west of De Leon. The No 1 George Stone State well lies 3934 feet from the north and 330 feet from the east lines of Section 32 D D and A L Survey.
In a letter to Mrs. V B Hodges, Eadie explains the image is from one of De Leon's first Melon Festivals. She notes Eadie is Edith, not Dear Sir, and identifies Jack as the Dear Sir in the family.
The De Leon District Singing Convention will meet at St Joe Baptist Church Sunday afternoon February 6 at 2 oclock. The Moody Singers will be special guests. The public is invited.
Brownwood hosts three nights of regional Golden Gloves boxing at Memorial Hall February 3 4 and 5 with gates at 7 30 p m Amateur entrants from Central Texas schools Tarleton State College Howard Payne Fort Hood Goodfellow Field and other sites compete Winners advance to Fort Worth for the state tourney Brownwood Junior Chamber of Commerce president Ferris Clements notes Memorial Hall seats 2600 and will be warm for the event, regardless of weather.
The Stephenville Branch of the American Association of University Women asks De Leon area housewives who are college graduates and not employed to submit their names to Mrs Leslie Daniels. The group aims to compile lists of graduates with degree type institution and major to help school superintendents find qualified teachers.
Local Troop 25 of the Boy Scouts of America outlines a full National Boy Scout Week schedule from February 6 to 12. Activities begin with church services, include a Lions Club program, parent reception at the Scout Hut with rank badges, and conclude with a father and son cookout featuring a campfire building contest and a donated flint and steel set. The troop aims for a ribbon award from the Manche Trail Council for the week’s activities.
A conference for Sunday School workers met at Comanche First Baptist Church last Thursday evening. The gathering was described as interesting and constructive. Mr. W. E. Dickie served as president of the associational conference with 54 attendees from De Leon Baptist churches.
Latest figures show $1 270 18 collected in De Leon for the March of Dimes campaign. Al Strasner the local fund drive chairman thanks the people of this area for their contributions and cooperation.
De Leon recorded 1.40 inches of rain over about 14 hours, reported by L D Stewart manager of Texas Electric Co. The area saw a general rainfall across the county, bringing welcome relief and appreciation from residents.
An effort to establish an Experiment Farm in the Texas Southwestern Peanut Belt aims to improve peanut production and quality and study other sandy soil crops. State Rep. W. R. Chambers sponsors a bill to create the facility for Comanche County and nearby sandy areas. The piece notes peanuts as a major crop in the region and urges farmers to support the petition to the Texas Legislature, citing national wartime demand and the need for state research driven by the federal call to help farmers.
De Leon celebrated De Leon Day during the Southwestern Exposition and Fat Stock Show with the De Leon Press banner inviting Fort Worth visitors. Mr and Mrs F D Hicks leave De Leon after 55 years in newspapers. They previously ran the Free Press in De Leon from 1947 to 1952, then owned Rising Star Record before moving back to De Leon in 1954. They will reside on a 12 acre farm east of Stephenville on the Fort Worth Highway and invite friends to visit.
The De Leon Salvation Army Service Unit names Mrs. Charlene Terrill and Delton Nabors as 1955 campaign leaders with a $500 quota. About 156 people received aid last year including eyeglasses medical care food lodging and clothing. Some youths attended Lone Star Summer Camp for Boys at Spring Texas.
Edward Dyson a 17 year old Future Farmer from De Leon and son of Mr and Mrs Faye Dyson showed the third place Duroe Barrow in the lightweight division of the Junior show at the Southwestern Exposition and Livestock Show in Fort Worth Saturday. Dyson entered two animals with one placing 3rd and the other 6th. The animals were selected, fitted and shown under the direction of W M Robinson and R H R Campbell vocational agriculture teachers at De Leon High School.
The Regional Golden Gloves Tournament will be held in Brownwood at Memorial Hall at 7 30 p m on February 3 4 and 5. Sponsored by the Brownwood Junior Chamber of Commerce. De Leon entrants include Miles Davis Wayne Sanders Marvin Stewart Roger George James Frasier Chester Brownlee Lester Brownlee Lynn Whatley Jimmy Sides Donald Mitchell Benny Warren Lawrence Boyd and Jim Golden.
Fort Worths first stock show started in 1893 5 at Marine Creek area near the old packing house. J Doss Miller a leading De Leon Shorthorn breeder visited many Fort Worth Redcasts and praised the exposition growth while noting a recent absence due to family death and illness.
The Salvation Army announces its drive as the sole fundraising effort for the funds drive. The local service unit committee includes C. E. Irby as chairman and E. A. Kirby as treasurer with members A. C. Craig Coy Orwell J. M. Foust Delton Nabors Dewey Fields De Loyn Singleton and Mrs Brinson. The drive starts Tuesday February 8 at 9 30 AM from Blacks Cafe with coffee and doughnuts for workers.
The annual census of school children concluded January 31. Children born between September 1, 1937 and September 1, 1949 missed by the enumerator should contact Ernest Repass or K. H. Rowland. The state provides $68 per child toward public school operation. the board awaits results to determine first grade teaching needs for next year.
The Comanche County Pension Club No. 1 will meet in the county courtroom at Comanche on February 5 at 2 p.m. A guest speaker from California is expected, with additional speakers. Members are urged to attend and bring friends. Effie Shannon, Corresponding Secretary.
The Free Press reports the Erath County Singing Convention will be held at the Court House in Stephenville on Sunday February 6 at 2 PM. Robert S. Arnold and his National Quartet from Fort Worth will be present.
