Priority list includes soil and water conservation measures such as permanent vegetative cover, waterway shaping, seeding grasses, cross-fencing, livestock water wells and pipelines, diversion terraces, brush control, water impoundments, and terrace systems.
District 10-A action opens January 3 with Kittens and Bearcats traveling to Dublin. American Agriculture will meet at the De Leon City Hall Friday December 30 at 7 00 p m All farmers are urged to attend An out of town speaker will be on hand to answer questions and formulate plans.
Comanche County pecans fared well at the Central Texas Regional Pecan Show held December 14-16 at Ridgmar Mall Fort Worth. Womack's Nursery of De Leon won Champion Shelling Pecan with a Sioux nut and led in multiple classes including several firsts and seconds with top kernel percentages.
Texas A&M researchers led by Dr. R. Weaver show rhizobia in peanut nodules convert air nitrogen to ammonium, boosting yields by up to 100 dollars per acre with inoculants. Field trials near Stephenville Yoakum confirm gains, though some soils resist inoculation and drought affects fixation.
Lone Star Gas Company officials were informed that the Railroad Commission of Texas issued a final order denying Lo-Vaca Gathering Co a relief from gas sales contracts. Lo-Vaca, affiliate of Coastal States, had delivered gas under an interim order allowing above-contract charges. Officials expect potential refunds and reduced immediate deliverability, though long-term gas supply remains adequate.
Texas motorists will receive license plate renewal notices by mail as a new system spreads renewal dates over 12 months. Vehicle numbers determine renewal month, prorated fees apply, and notices must be shown at county tax offices. Processing may be longer this first year, with county assessors ready from the first work day of 1978.
A fire that started from a bathroom heater gutted a frame home on Pittman Street last Thursday night December 22. De Leon volunteers fought the blaze for over two hours damaging the interior and attic as firefighters faced dry conditions and many closets and stairways where fires rekindled. Owner Ben Hernandez and his daughter and son in law Freddy and Mrs Rubio lived there with three occupants reported. The Rubios remained at the scene until 1:00 a.m. Thursday.
