De Leon’s Bearcats claim a State Championship the long admired program had never achieved before. Coach Waggoner mentors a talented team whose offensive line drew praise from a veteran sports writer. Fans and merchants supported the season, and the Free Press offers a $100 prize this week for a lucky entry.
In Temple, De Leon Bearcats defeated Schulenburg 26 15 to claim the Class A state championship before about 5500 fans. McKillip led rushing with 122 yards, Hardin added 96, while Craig Smith threw and ran for key scores. The defense intercepted twice and contained Schulenburg’s offense as De Leon seized control with two third quarter touchdowns and held on for the title.
