De Leon will host its first varsity basketball tournament in several years with games starting Thursday and ending Saturday. The community is urged to attend to enjoy competitive basketball while volunteers supply hospitality items for coaches officials and visiting administrators. Contact Coach Ronnie Clifton to help.
De Leon schools will dismiss Friday afternoon December 19 for the Christmas holidays. Classes will resume on Monday January 5, 1981.
Winston L. Wilson a Quanah native and former Deputy Undersecretary of Agriculture for Commodity Programs is named to the top administrative position on Congressman Charles W. Stenholm's staff He will replace James E Morgan in Stenholms Washington office Morgan will return to De Leon to resume private law practice Stenholm touts Wilsons capabilities and district ties Wilson is a Texas A&M graduate with degrees in agricultural economics and has held leadership roles in Quanah including chamber president The item continues on page 2
The De Leon Bands held their annual Christmas concert at the high school auditorium. Kerry Miller received the John Philip Sousa award, Sherry Miller won the Mighty Maroon Band award, and Jonie Cox earned the junior high band award. The program featured performances by the Sixth Grade Band, Junior High Band, and the high school Mighty Maroon Band with a total of 183 musicians listed across sections.
Sue Wilson reports the 65 Club members and guests held their annual Christmas party on December 4 at Farmers & Merchants Bank. Ira Lee Brannan and Neva Brannan were introduced as honorary guests. A turkey dinner was served buffet style followed by a Larry Sinclair Family concert and ventriloquism act. Each guest received a lapel pin gift from the bank.
Three Mighty Maroon Band members from De Leon High School attended Tarleton University for All Regional Band tryouts on December 12 and 13. Tommy Sones earned 1st alternate Baritone, Clint Whitehead 3rd chair Trumpet, and Donald McClure 6th chair Tuba. Clint's placement advances him to the All Area Band in Austin January 17, with All State auditions in February in San Antonio.
The Free Press sets an early Christmas edition with newsstands on Tuesday December 23. Deadline for news items and ads is Monday December 22 at noon.
Dr. Michael Burk of De Leon attended a two day Fort Worth seminar tied to the Texas brucellosis program. Co sponsored by TAHC and other groups, he is now certified to aid livestock producers under program fee base rules.
De Leon Schools sponsor a varsity tournament from Thursday to Saturday December 18-20. Eight girls and eight boys teams compete for trophies with finals set Saturday night at 7:00 for girls and 8:30 for boys. Saturday also features consolation finals at 1:00 and third place at 4:00.
A Christmas Cantata titled An Old Fashioned Christmas will be presented at First Baptist Church on Sunday December 21 at 6 00 P M The cantata is arranged and composed by Don Wurtzen and directed by Tim Skaggs The adult choir will perform Christmas carols and music within the program
The program features the Children's Choir and a Tim Skaggs and Jackson Boen duet. Elizabeth is played by Janet Paul, Timothy by Brad Bunting, and the grandfather by Bro R L Swanner. Narration will be provided by Jackie Auvenshine.
