Christmas Parish Party and Goodfellows Aid Planned

The Community Club sponsors its annual Christmas Party this Saturday with Santa, a big program, and a parade for children. About fifty less fortunate families will receive Goodfellows boxes around December 23. Local merchants urged to support the event. a $30 donation from Round Grove Church is noted.

Three One-Act Plays Friday Night at Junior High

Junior High students present three one act plays on Friday December 17 at the High School Auditorium. Curtain at 7:00 p.m. admission 35c for adults 20c for students. Cast from seventh and eighth grades, plays titled Have You Seen Red Wilbur Saw It First and Ghost of Deepdene. Bearcat Band co sponsors and handles ads and advance ticket sales with half the proceeds going to the new uniform fund and the Junior High using its share for basketball equipment. Robinson Springs Baptist Church Christmas Program and Gift Exchange

Robinson Springs Baptist Church invites the public to a Wednesday program themed What Does Christmas Mean to You at 7 15 pm. Gifts exchanged at the close require a present not exceeding fifty cents. Youths will be presented and attendees may bring a love gift to Jesus.

Goodfellows urge De Leon residents to donate items for needy families. Gifts such as chickens turkeys clothing toys should be left with Ollie Ross at the Locker Plant by December 22 with name and address on the bundle. Peanuts Grading in De Leon Reaches New Totals

The De Leon weighing office reported 2230 tons of peanuts tested up to noon last Saturday with an estimated 750 more tons. Average grade stood at 60 percent. low 32 percent. high 73 percent. Growers from Brownwood Granbury Stephenville and nearby areas contributed to the total, with potential to push pounds to about 6.1 million if more peanuts are graded.

Santa Claus Arrival at City Hall for Kiddies

Santa Claus comes to town to meet children and their parents at City Hall at 2 p.m. Saturday December 18. A fire siren signals his approach from the North Pole. Mayor Eldon Terrill Doc Carter and Miss Barbara Terrill greet Santa as Bearcat Band leads a downtown parade. Rip Vance drives the buckboard while the Ross Bros De Leon Quartet German Quartet Melodears and Tru man Boen provide music. Santa will be available to collect Christmas lists starting at 2 p.m. Everyone is invited.

Christmas Edition To Be in Mails on Wednesday

The Free Press announces a Christmas edition to be mailed by Wednesday to reach readers by Christmas Eve. Contributors are urged to drop Christmas greetings or cards at the office by Monday afternoon, with Santa letters and late community news featured. The New Year issue will follow the same deadline rules and then return to regular schedule.

A De Leon mother toppled over by constant door raps flung a dipper of cold water at the visitor who appeared dripping and startled on her porch. The confrontation ended with a shocked stranger and a tale of nerves stretched thin.

Son of ex publisher survives plane crash near Rising Star

Col John Curtis Adams retired Army officer and light plane enthusiast escaped serious injury after his light plane conked out while circling to land at Cecil Shults ranch six miles north of Rising Star. He was treated and released from Rising Star hospital. The wreckage remained on the Shults property for inspection by a CAA examiner.

Rising Star Girl Chosen Cross Timbers District Sweetheart

Miss Rhea Erwin daughter of Mr and Mrs Bruce Erwin of Rising Star was selected district sweetheart of the Cross Timbers District of the Future Farmers of America at the district dinner at Tarleton State College Stephenville Monday night. She was chosen from 22 candidates and will compete next May for area Sweetheart with four districts ahead of Houston state meeting in July.

Cottonwood Tree in Front Free Press Office 20 Years Old

The Cottonwood in front of the Free Press office is 20 years old says authorities including Bill Dendy and Joe Houser. The tree has survived rough days and attracted watchers who protected it with stairs. Carruths planted nearby arboviate plants and own the property, urging continued care and watering.

Stephenville Wins Cage Tournament at De Leon Invite

Stephenville dominated the 1954 De Leon Invitational closing night. The Lady Jackets beat De Leon 29 16 with strong ball control while the Stephenville boys crushed Dublin 49 15 led by Jones with 17. Other winners included German over Cisco 39 36 for girls consolation and De Leon taking the boys consolation 39 36 over Pottsville.

George Moffett of Chillicothe was elevated to grand master at the 119th Texas Masons session in Waco on December 3. He succeeds San Antonio’s W. B. Ball. New officers include W. W. Boothe Paris deputy grand master, Paul Turney Sorona grand senior warden, John Kemmerer Fort Worth grand junior warden, Harvey C. Byrd Waco re-elected grand secretary, Leonard Studer Waco re-elected grand treasurer, and Lee Dendy named District Deputy Grand Master for the 72nd district. Dendy will visit lodges with wife and Mr. and Mrs. O. B. Ross. Ross is Masons’ treasurer.”

De Leon schools begin Christmas break at 2 15 p m on Wednesday December 22 1954 and run through January 3 1955 Dec 23 and 24 count as two of the five holidays allowed under the Foundation School Program March 11 April 8 and April 11 are observed as the remaining holidays The week of December 27 through December 31 will be made up by extending classes one week at the end of the spring semester.

Gorman Moves Up to Class A Football

Superintendent Wilson announced Gorman will play Class A football next year. The move follows concerns about scheduling if some Class B schools field six man teams. Gorman joins District with Ranger Rising Star Eastland Cross Plains and Wylie after release from District B.
