De Leon Christmas shopping and events lead town week

De Leon merchants stay open until 8 PM on Friday for Christmas shopping with Santa arriving at City Hall at 8. The annual De Leon Bands Christmas Concert is Sunday at 2 30 PM in the high school auditorium. Bearcats earn all district football honors and an elderly Baird storyteller shares a humorous note about a campground query. Cont'd to Page 2.

Mrs. V V Bell Celebrates 99th Birthday in De Leon

Mrs. V V Bell marked her 99th birthday on December 4 at home in De Leon after a life devoted to sewing for orphaned children and supporting veterans. Born in 1881 near Dublin and Stephenville, she worked in De Leon stores and helped raise four children, remaining active through crafting, gardening, and church choir work. She credits the good Lord for her longevity and continues to donate to charity and enjoy life at 309 East Alamante.

Patton Named Precinct 2 Comanche County Commissioner

Clodah Patton widow of Billy Patton was sworn in by County Judge Johnny Livingston as Comanche County Commissioner of Precinct 2. She becomes the county's first woman on the Commissioners Court and will serve out her late husband’s term until the November 1982 election. Patton, a six year commissioner, holds degrees from Howard Payne University and retired in 1976 after 42 years teaching in Pettit and Gustine. She has also worked in the McDougal Auction Barn accounting office.

Letters To Santa To Be Printed

The Free Press will publish letters to Santa Claus in its December 24 issue. Children should mail letters to Santa Claus care of De Leon Free Press Box 320 De Leon Texas 76444. Letters must arrive by Wednesday December 17.

Christmas Coloring Contest Entry Form Appears

An entry form for the Free Press Christmas Coloring Contest is on page 4. Children age 10 or under should color the Christmas scene with crayons pencils or water colors. Entries due by 5 00 p m Wednesday December 17 at the Free Press office. Winners announced in the Christmas edition with prizes of 5 00 3 00 and 2 00.

Christmas Band Concert To Be Presented Sunday Afternoon

The De Leon bands directed by Don Halbrook present the annual Christmas concert at 2 30 p m Sunday December 14 in First. The Sixth Grade Band of 40 members opens with five numbers followed by the 65 member Junior High Band, then the 78 member Mighty Maroon Band closes with seven selections. A small admission charge.

Christmas Edition Moves Up One Day

The Free Press announces a one day earlier Christmas edition for Tuesday December 23. News items and ads must be submitted by Monday December 22 at noon.

Peanut farmers vote December on marketing quota extension

U.S. peanut growers vote December 8 to 11 on continuing the national marketing quota plan for 1981 to 1983. If two thirds approve, nearly 3.2 billion pounds of peanuts could be eligible for loan supports. Secretary Bergland cites a 1981 quota of 2.88 billion pounds with potential 300 million more if extended.

Christmas Cantata At Methodist Church Dublin

The First United Methodist Church of De Leon hosts a Christmas Cantata this Sunday at 7:00 PM with combined choirs directed by Suzie McClure and a brass ensemble. Ensemble players include Tommy Sones Kevin Caraway Chris Caraway Donald McClure Marlin Priddy Jack Boen Vernon Harrison and Don Halbrook. Piano organ by Gladys Holdridge Nelda Priddy with soloists Xandra Mathis Marvin Holdridge Adele Baker Don Russell and narrator Nancy Brown.

Five Bearcats Named To First Team All District In Football

Ten 10-AA coaches named Bearcats to the all district squads with five on the first team offense and defense. Jimmy Lewis and Rickey Wilson headline the offense while David Stokes Jerry Walker and Edwin Hale lead the defense, plus several Bearcats on second team and honorable mention.
