The De Leon Bearcats, district football champions, faced criticism over their All-District selections as eight players from Ranger and only three from De Leon drew spots. Dublin had two players despite winless season.
The 7th grade boys defeated Comanche while 7th grade girls and 6th graders fought hard but fell short. The 8th grade girls lost 19-10 in a one sided game, with Terri Van Zandt scoring eight. The 8th grade boys dropped a 27-23 heartbreaker as Smith led Cats with eight points.
The De Leon Livestock Association sponsors a Turkey Shoot December 19 from 1 30 to 4 30 PM at the Riding Club Barn Proceeds fund brakes for the FFA stock trailer Participants may shoot their own gun Four divisions Boys and Girls age 12 through high school Mens and Womens divisions Entry 3 shots for one dollar.
Bearcats coached by Larry Nabors drop five games in week two of the season. Randy Hardin leads scoring with 29 in a 48-58 loss to Gorman in the Dublic Tournament first round. Hardin earns 21 points in a 50-37 consolation win over Dublin.
Entry blanks available at the Chamber of Commerce or from the De Leon Free Press. First prize a Reddy-Lite donated by Texas Electric Service Co. Second prize $20. Third prize $10. Entries accepted until 5:00 PM December 21. Must reside within De Leon city limits.
Nominations were held at De Leon High School for Who’s Who awards and the following Thursday the election produced results. Seniors Ronnie Golden and Terry Park topped the All DHS girls and boys lists while other honors went to Toby Mahan and D L Wilkerson for Best School Spirit and to Myron Adams and Tina Walker for Most Scholarly. Gary Vaughn and D Arla Scott were Most Talented with Roland Almaguer and Effie Dobson named Most Athletic and Brad Koonce and Allison Smith as Friendliest.
Pecan Bake Show held in De Leon City Hall December 4 1971 with judges Mrs W H Smith Jr and Mrs Doyce Short. Virginia Davis and Dodie Gillette of Comanche tied for first. Golda Keith of De Leon won second. Various categories list winners including Womack's Nursery De Leon and nearby residents across cookies candy shelling and seedling events.
The De Leon girls coached by Mary Clark split four games. Key performances include Becky Dossey 15 points against San Saba, 13 by Paula Thomas, and 18 rebounds by Ann Gilder. They won the Dublin Tournament opener 40-21 over German, then lost to Hamilton 43-65.
The Free Press releases a daily weather report for the Proctor Reservoir Weather Station. It covers temperatures and moisture for 24 hours from 6 am to 8 am with dates November 30 through December 6 showing highs, lows, and rainfall, though some lines are garbled.
The De Leon Chamber of Commerce requests strong voter participation for peanut allotments and price supports. A Board meeting is set for Thursday at 3 30 PM. The Texas Industrial Commission study places De Leon among similar towns, highlighting growth and areas for improvement.
The District Court of Comanche County summons petit jurors for Monday December 13 at 1 p.m. The list includes numerous residents and addresses across Gustine, Dublin, De Leon, Blanket, Sidney, and De Leon areas, reflecting a broad cross section of the community.
Ranger and De Leon lead with top honors as the 10A all-district selections name eight Bulldog picks and five each for Goldthwaite and Early. Roland Almaguer and Larry Kimmell headline both offensive and defensive rosters, while De Leon earns three players among five positions and Dublin places two.
