The Bearcats are rated number ten in Class A in the 1976 Harris Rating System Texas schoolboy football forecast. Brazoswood heads 4A, Port Neches Grove leads AAA, Rockdale tops AA, and Rochester leads Class B. Harris lists Class A standings.
The Bearcat program enters the 1976 season with 111 players across varsity and junior high levels. Varsity has 23 players led by captains Toby Hare Joe Bob Huddleston and Rocky Hardin, with 13 seniors eight juniors and two sophomores.
Comanche County Telephone Company announces rate hikes effective August 15. One party business service rises by $1 to a minimum $11.50, while one party residential rates increase to $8, an 85 cent rise. Don Weehunt, manager, cites upgrading plant facilities and higher operating costs over five years.
Gene Royall, manager of Community Television, filed charges on a repeat offender in county court. The offender appeared, received a fine plus costs, and was directed to make restitution. The case may set a Texas precedent and be followed by other cable operators.
Richard D. Smith, 25, of Comanche, found guilty of capital murder in the April 15 death of T. R. Durham, a Comanche pharmacist. The eight to four jurors imposed mandatory death. sentencing followed after a brief deliberation. Ripley testified with Smith, facing related charges to be tried separately.
Deputy Garmon arrested Richard Radues in Austin for the Gustine Mercantile Store burglary on Sunday night Aug 8. Radues, 22, is jailed in Comanche County with a $10,000 bond and faces the October grand jury if not posted. Officers recovered all stolen clothes and a suspect was found in underwear on Austin streets.
The De Leon district reports total 749 students for the 1976-77 year, up from 719. High school adds to 199 with grades by senior, junior, sophomore, and freshman counts. Junior high enrolls 130, elementary 420 with kindergarten to sixth grade totals listed.
