Texas Electric Officials Visit De Leon

Texas Electric President Bill Marquardt and Vice President Bob Martin visited De Leon last Tuesday along with Richard Armstrong, local Texas Electric Service Company manager. They discussed energy shortages and the slow process of finding replacements for oil and gas amid a national energy shortfall.

Telethon pledge center staff in De Leon for MDA drive

Joe and Debbie Locke volunteer to staff the pledge center for the Jerry Lewis Telethon in De Leon at the Chamber of Commerce. Televised locally on KXAS TV from Sunday 10 30 p m to Monday 5 30 p m. Bearcats Travel To Hamilton For Friday Night Scrimmages

The Bearcat B and varsity teams travel to Hamilton for scrimmages with the Bulldogs on Friday. The B team starts at 6 30 p m followed by the varsity game. De Leon opens the 1977 season September 2 at Gorman.

De Leon Dog Collar and Vaccination Tag Ordinance Enforced

City officials will soon enforce a De Leon ordinance requiring dogs to wear a collar and vaccination tag noting two rabies shots. The ordinance became an official rule and will be implemented to ensure compliance.

Steer Weigh-In Saturday Under Comanche Program

The Comanche County 1978 Commercial Steer Feeding Program begins Saturday August 27 with steer weighing at the Comanche County Livestock Center from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. Steers must weigh 400 to 600 pounds and be dehorned and castrated. Weighing is overseen by William Fair Daymond Power and Russell Hayes with Power as superintendent of the Market Steel Department for the Junior Livestock Show.

Harris Rating system names Bearcats state Class A favorite

In the Texas Schoolboy Football Forecast for 1977 the Harris Rating System ranks De Leon Bearcats second in Class A and predicts them to win District 10-A. Certification Required for Pesticide Applicators by Oct 21

Pesticide applicators who use or supervise restricted use pesticides must be certified by October 21. Certifications can be commercial or non-commercial and are administered by four state agencies aligned to pest areas: Agriculture, Animal Health, Water Quality, and Health Resources. Training is provided by the Agricultural Extension Service.

Bearcats Tie Coleman In Scrimmage Game

The De Leon Bearcats hosted Coleman Bluecats in scrimmage play with the B team drawing 0-0 and the varsity tying 1-1. Coach Jack Waggoner called the session typical early in the season noting hard physical play and bright spots alongside rougher moments. De Leon will travel to Hamilton for next week’s scrimmage.

Comanche Air Show Draws Thousands Despite Rain Delays

More than five thousand spectators attended the Comanche Air Show at the Comanche County City Airport as rain slowed some demonstrations. Fort Hood Sixth Cavalry units brought six UH1D Huey helicopters and low level flight displays, plus Mohawk aircraft. Army skydivers, Robb Satterfield of Midland piloting a Chipmunk, and Col Lefty Gardner piloting a Lockheed P 38 Lightning provided aerial feats.

Texas First Quarter 1977 Gross Sales Rise 19.4 Percent

Texas businesses reported 33.8 billion in gross sales for the first quarter of 1977, up 19.4 percent from a year earlier. Out of state firms added 3 billion in Texas sales for January and March, based on reports from 233,000 tax permit holders. Comanche County’s quarter total aids flood control budgeting.
