Bearcat Football Opens Scrimmage as De Leon Rebuilds

Bearcat football unofficially starts with junior varsity and varsity scrimmages at Coleman Friday night. De Leon Library Receives Four Books from Carter Museum

The De Leon Public Library lists four books donated by the Amon Carter Museum of Western Art and the Texas Commission on the Arts and Humanities. The set includes The Image of America in Caricature and Cartoon, The Face of Liberty, The Stripes and Stars, and The Artist was a Young Man.

Hunter Safety Classes Held in Comanche this August

Comanche hosts hunter safety sessions on Monday and Wednesday evenings from 7 to 9 in the Farm Bureau Building on Highway 16. The twelve hour course runs Aug 16 18 23 25 30 and Sept 1 with a $1 registration. Cathy Evans leads the classes for Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. Hunters born after January 1 1949 must complete safety instruction to hunt in Colorado New Mexico and twenty one other western states. A certificate is issued upon completion.

Tex Ag Extension Service horticulturist advises planting bluebonnet seed in late summer as winter annuals. Seed should be scratched or soaked in warm water before sowing on tilled soil and kept moist until seedlings emerge.

Peanuts Disease Watch Aids Texas Producers

A plant pathologist from the Texas Agricultural Extension Service says monitoring peanut crops and weather reduces disease. A joint Extension Service and National Weather Service system alerts growers to weather favorable for disease development. The alerts air on local radio and prompt protective fungicide applications.

De Leon Peanut Company Float Tops Dublin Fall Fair Parade

The De Leon Peanut Company float won first place in the out-of-town floats division at the Dublin Fall Fair parade. The Peach and Melon Festival float placed second. Local tractor pullers earned trophies with Eddie Lindley Monty Stewart Ted Higginbottom Charles Lee Billy Mack Barnes and Mickey Robinett among the winners.

Three From De Leon Receive Degrees At Tarleton

Tarleton State University conferred degrees on 96 seniors and 120 graduates at a Wisdom Gym ceremony on August 15. Dr. James H. Stewart Jr. of Texas Eastern University Tyler delivered the commencement address, noting his Tarleton roots and Tyler presidency. August graduates from De Leon included Martha Brewer Bunting, Sherry Nowlin Sharp, and Jack B. Waggoner.

Bearcats Scrimmage Coleman Friday

The Bearcats travel to Coleman Friday night for their first football action of 1976. Coach Waggoner says Coleman is tough with a large AA student body. The B team opens at 6 30 p.m. and the varsity at 8 p.m. Next Friday they host the Hamilton Bulldogs before facing German on September 3.

De Leon ISD Classes Start August 18 1976

De Leon Independent School District opened the 1976-77 school year on Wednesday August 18. Officials expect about 755 students enrolled, as teachers began in-service training the prior week on August 12.

The Corps of Engineers and Texas Parks and Wildlife sponsor weekly Friday Night Movies at West Copperas Creek Park Proctor Lake. On August 20 1976 dusk showings include Mirrors of Time about Gulf Oil exploration and Monument to a Dream on the Gateway Arch project.
