De Leon School Prepares for 1977-78 Opening

The De Leon Public Schools schedule the 1977-78 start for August 25 at 8:00 a.m. with renovation near completion and enrollment around 740. Kindergarten screenings are set for August 22, with registration for new students starting August 23. The Lunch program keeps last year prices and free meals apply for qualifying families. The Fighting Bearcats and Mighty Maroon Band begin practice for another strong year.

Omar Burleson Announces Retirement From Congress

Representative Omar Burleson of Texas says he will not seek another term after more than thirty years in the 17th district. Aged 71, he announced early to give voters time to evaluate candidates for next May's primary. Burleson chaired House panels before joining Ways and Means in 1968 and will return to the district with his wife Ruth.

A new group of high school students called Junior Volunteers assists the De Leon Hospital staff this summer. They work alongside nurses and aides to support patient care and hospital operations, bringing energy and enthusiasm to the facility.

De Leon to Enforce Sidewalk and Fire Ordinances

Chief Albert Biggs announced city enforcement of long neglected rules. Fines of 10 to 100 dollars will apply to riding bicycles or skateboards on sidewalks and to starting open fires within city limits. Comanche Air Show Returns Saturday At Municipal Airport

The 8th annual Comanche Air Show happens this Saturday at Comanche Airport. Event free to the public with aircraft exhibits and schedule including remote controlled planes, National Guard equipment, Fort Hood helicopters, a VIP lunch, flag raising, and skydivers. Blood Pressure Checks At Peach and Melon Festival

During the 63rd Peach and Melon Festival, 246 people used free blood pressure checks sponsored by the Leon Valley Migrant Health Project. Twenty four had elevated levels, about 9.8 percent, with half in care. Followups show six additional checks and one ongoing elevated case.

The Peach and Melon Festival 4-H event lists winners across clothing divisions including Tailored Suit or Pantsuit Junior Cathy Bruton and Grand Champion Judy Johnson, Blouse Junior Cathy Bruton, and Pants Junior Cathy Bruton among others. In the Dress and Skirt categories Melinda Johnson and Cathy Bruton also earned top placements with multiple juniors and seniors named.
