Peach and Melon Festival 1955 recap and local notes

The 1955 Peach and Melon Festival promoted diversified crops and regional advertising. A De Leon motorcade visited ten towns, over 100 radio spot announcements aired, and farm program features boosted the festival. Downing Baptist Revival Set at Local Church

Rev Roy H Hill announces a revival at Downing Baptist Church starting Sunday night August 21 and continuing through Sunday evening August 28. Preaching will be by Rev Bill Parr of Arlington at 8 p m daily. Everyone is invited to attend.

Demonstration Of Pre Freezing Methods Here

Methods for freezing foods will be demonstrated at the Fire Building in German and at De Leon City Auditorium on August 25 and 26. L D Stewart announces two sessions daily at 10 am and 3 pm with Elizabeth Gunther and Frances Rooney of TESCO home service leading displays of freezers packing methods and ready to eat frozen items. Demonstrations cover shelves for picnic, party, meat and a fourth section of commercially frozen foods and proper packing of produce meats and fruits. Electric appliances will be used. Fort Worth visitors include Mrs Ralph Gilder and others.

Football candidates asked to report for fall workouts

All high school football candidates are asked to report to Al Langford at the Football Stadium Monday morning to draw uniforms and begin first fall workouts.

Weiner Roast Honors Local Baseball Players

The Baseball Association of De Leon invites all Little League and Pony League players and managers to a weiner roast for outstanding sportsmanship in the 1955 season. The event is at the baseball field at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday August 23. Cold drinks and weiners provided.

Local Fair Rewards Winners In Floats And Contests

Peach and Melon winners listed with prizes including 1st place 50 dollars for Price's Flowers and 78 lb largest watermelon Otto Cogburn winning 25 dollars. Pet parade, community booths, watermelons, fiddler contests, races, fishing and grease pig contests noted with top finishers and prize money. Proceeds from the watermelons auction benefited growers and participating groups.

Revival Begins At Northside Baptist Church

A revival starts Sunday morning August 21 and runs to Sunday night August 28 at Northside Baptist Church. Rev T J Sparkman of Raymondville will preach. he formerly led De Leon's First Baptist. Daily services at 10 AM and 8 PM with 730 PM prayer meetings. Al Strasner leads singing and Eula Gillock plays piano. All invited.
