Space Center scientists study Apollo 15 moon rocks to probe the crust and determine ages up to 4.6 billion years. The findings could reveal clues to the origin of the Moon, Earth, and the solar system.
The Beach and Melon Festival opened with a downtown parade on Wednesday drawing crowds. Notable entrants included Lt. Governor Ben Barnes and Rep. Lynn Nabers of Brownwood. Winners spanned COMMUNITY FLOATS, COMMERCIAL FLOATS, DECORATED FLOATS, PET PARADE, and BICYCLE PARADE with numerous local groups honored.
Booths in the exhibition hall drew visitors with varied displays. W. H. Smith Department Store won the commercial division with fall clothes and antique furniture. Comanche County Telephone placed third with a colorful phone display. Northside Baptist Church won the civic division with a world map and wooden cross theme.
Kenneth Quinn son of Mr and Mrs James Quinn won the $300 drawn Saturday night from tickets sold by queen candidates. He was a 1971 graduate. Cub Scouts displayed a campsite scene and the Comanche Diamondback Club booth drew visitors with rattlesnakes and copperheads.
4-Hers from Eastland, Erath and Comanche counties compete at the Peach and Melon Festival grounds in sections from sewing to crafts. Senior firsts include Suzanne Harbin, Hollie Huse, Jeanette Walker, and Tina Walker with outfits and sewn items. Junior winners feature Laura Ledbetter, Brenda Traweek, Lisa Walker, Mary Jane Harbin, and Janece Boen, among others.
The Free Press publishes the 24 hour weather outlook from 8 a.m. to 8 a.m. The Proctor Reservoir Weather Station releases temperatures and moisture data for the period. Readings cover temperature highs and lows with humidity trends noted for the region.
About 125 former De Leon High School students gathered at the auditorium for the ex students reunion. Wallace Cook welcomed guests and introduced speakers Claude Larson Ben Barnes and James Milstead. Autry Andress was elected president and Anna Lou Browning secretary treasurer. A lunch followed at PAR Country Club.
D. D. Lowery won first in the large melon class with a 72.5 pound Jim Cobb watermelon at the Beach & Melon Festival. Herman Gilder earned second with a 61-pound Black Diamond, and A. L. McCrary’s 59-pound Jim Cobb took third. Black Diamond melons led the trio, with Burl Lowery first and Deryl Johnson second in the related group. Rex McGinnis’s three jubilee melons exhibited won third. Debra Whitehurst’s Pecos cantaloupes topped the cantaloupe division, with pepper Joiner and Bill Gray in second and third. Dean Pounds claimed best peaches with Elberta, followed by Bryan Smith’s Red Skins and Hale peaches from W. H. Smith Sr. in third.

The De Leon Peach and Melon Festival saw OD D Lowery's 72 1/2 pound melon sell for $162.50 to Blanco Products Company and Mobil Chemical. Other notable sales include Herman Gilder's 61 pound melon at $125 to C. M. Caraway & Sons and Burl Lowery's trio at $95 to W. E. Johnson Fertilizer & Seed Company.
Miss De Leon Wilkerson 16 daughter of Mr and Mrs Bill Wilkerson won the 57th De Leon Peach and Melon Festival pageant. She received a $100 corsage for selling the most merchandise tickets and was sponsored by the De Leon Study Club as she enters De Leon High School junior year.
