The Peach and Melon Festival annual auction on Main Street drew buyers for pears apples peaches watermelons and cantaloupes. De Leon Peanut Company led with 357 across melons and cakes followed by Golden Oak 330 Farmers and Merchants Bank 261 Shell Peanut Company 224 and D S Farm Supply 210 with multiple items purchased by local growers and businesses. Top Commercial Float in Peanut Heritage Parade Featured
The Year of the Peanut float by De Leon Peanut Company led the parade with riders Keith Terry Jarrett Eisenrich Mr. Peanut and the Comanche Chief. Other winners included Morris 2nd Crystal Pullin 3rd Paul Burke in youth divisions. Brown County Sheriff’s Posse won riding club, Trail Blazers placed third. Antique vehicles saw Rocky Ash win with a 1927 Model T and Pedro Westmoreland a 1928 A.

The De Leon Ex-Students Association held its annual meeting at City Hall with prayers from Ray Harvey and welcoming remarks by Mayor Scotty Campbell. The 1927 class was honored by C. L. Burl Scott received a gift for distance traveled, Augusta Compton earned oldest member honors, Doyle Holmes spoke, and Raymond Butler noted the 1976 football team. Officers elected: John M. Weaver President and Evelyn Moore Vice-President.

The annual Peach and Melon Festival parade attracted large crowds with a three mile route last Wednesday. Twenty five floats entered with Brownwood Shriners Band Army Calvary Band and Abilene Marine Color Guard providing bands. Prizes awarded featured Civic Floats won by De Leon Study Club, ESA Sorority and Farmers Union. Commercial Floats won by De Leon Peanut Company, Smiths Fruit Farm and Hightower Welding.

Fourth Annual Festival Tractor Pull Results Highlight Local Winners
The event crowned best local puller with Ruben Almaguer taking top honors in 9,000 and 7,000 lb classes. Richard Beech, Jerry McKillip, Raymond Whitney and others placed in Farmall, International and John Deere divisions. All-Day Dove Season Opens Statewide in September
Texas Parks and Wildlife official Clayton Garrison announced the first all-day mourning dove season in years, with hunting from dawn to sunset in both zones except during four Rio Grande counties white wing dove days. Dove dates span September 1 to October 30 in the north and September 24 to November 6 in the south, plus a December 31 to January 15 winter stretch. white wings allowed noon to sunset on select early dates. Rails and gallinules run September 1 to November 9 from half an hour before sunrise to sunset. The commission will finalize other waterfowl seasons at its August 31 meeting.
