House Passes Peanut Bill After Close Call
Ross Wilson of the Southwestern Peanut Growers Association notes the Peanut Section of the Farm Act of 1977 passed the House on July 22 without damaging amendments. A late push by Rep. Heckler aimed to lower the $420 per ton minimum, but her amendment failed narrowly July 26. The House version mirrors the Senate measure with minor differences in New Mexico acreage and the bill’s duration ending in 1981.
