Registration for children who will start kindergarten in August 1976 runs 9 am to 3 pm on May 6 and 7. Eligibility requires the child to be five on or before September 1. Bring birth certificate and immunization record to the Kindergarten building south door.
In hearings held April 13 14 the USDA gave qualified support to H R 12808 the Peanut Act of 1976. Richard Bell Assistant Secretary of Agriculture told the House Agriculture Subcommittee that the bill is a first step toward reform but a target price program may fit future market needs better. The American Farm Bureau endorsed the bill opposing a target price compensatory payment plan, with final consideration set for May 25.
The F and M Bank 65 Club hosted a Hoboes party for 652 members planned for April 19 but postponed due to tornadoes in Brownwood and Heading De Leon. On April 22 Hoboes in authentic regalia enjoyed games, live music by James Robert Bobby Arthur, and prizes for best costumes.
De Leon hosts a Girls State Qualifiers Meet this Friday April 30 with field events at 4 00 p m and finals at 7 00 p m No preliminaries The top state qualifiers from northern Texas classes B A and AA will compete The DHL Kittens relay team Terrie Van Zandt Shirlee Chapp Kelly Mitchell and Perri Lou Short qualified last weekend for the state meet.
The Fort Worth District begins its 1976 camping fee collection from May 28 to September 6. Fees range 1.00 to 3.00 per day for campsites and 5.00 to 20.00 for group use areas, with 50 percent reductions for Golden Age passports. Electrical outlets carry 0.50 daily fees. one free camping area per lake is required. entrance is free and boat ramps remain free. Proctor Lake parks list Lowell Creek, Promontory, Copperas Creek with electric hookups varying by site.
Tryouts last Wednesday selected Bearcat and Cubcat cheerleaders by a three judge Tarleton State panel. Head Bearcat Kelly Mitchell leads the squad with senior Kelley Lindley to head the senior class. other members include Tracey Joiner Carolyn McKillip Donna Nowlin Dawn Waggoner and younger squads led by Dawn Waggoner with eighth graders Donna Boen Cathy Bruton Mari Alvey Cindy Wilkerson and Gayle Wilkerson.
The Spring Band Concert will be next Tuesday night May 4 at 7 30 p m in the High School Auditorium. The 6th grade band and Junior High Bands perform before the Mighty Maroon Band comprising this year's 8th through Junior Class members plays. Admission is 50 cents for adults and 25 cents for students.
In Comanche County Democrats vote Saturday with no Republican primary. Sheriff candidates include John O. Fenimore Jerry Hussey Bill J. Vine yard and W G Shilo Garman. Other unopposed races and a large slate for national and state offices also appear on the ballot. A sample ballot is printed elsewhere in this week's paper.
Students living outside the De Leon School District must file transfer papers before May 1 to attend next year. Papers are available in the Superintendent of Schools office at the High School.
Kelley Vannatta, a sophomore, took first place in Typewriting at the Regional Meet for Class A in Stephenville with a score of 149. DeLeon’s team claimed its 32nd consecutive District Championship with the top district average, 142, including Amanda Davis Latrell Davis Byron Smith and Kelley Vannatta under coach Allene Weaver Box. Vannatta advances to the state contests in Austin May 6 to 8.
The document lists students named to the junior high and high school honor rolls across classes. Toby Hare won both the discus and shot put at the district 10 A meet and will compete against other district winners at regional. Bearcat Tommy Cleere was a double winner at the district meet and will run the 120 yard high hurdles and 330 yard intermediate hurdles. Rocky Hardin and Nick Wolfe qualified for the mile run. The Bearcat mile relay team of Lester Walker, Marty Shoemaker, Ricky Snider, and Tommy Cleere placed second in district and qualified for the regional meet.
