Last Friday out to Thomas Butane, Ronald and I enjoyed a talking dog act by Trent, a local talent with a singing style that delighted us. Bearcats coach Jack Waggoner will leave De Leon for Humble School, carrying a record of district titles and De Leon’s first state championship, plus Coach of the Year honors in Texas.
The Small Business Administration designates 97 Texas counties including Comanche and neighbors Callahan Brown Erath Coryell Hood Hamilton Bosque Coleman Eastland Mills Palo Pinto San Saba as eligible for drought relief loans. Applications accepted through October 11, 1978 at SBA offices in Dallas Lubbock Houston and San Antonio with flexible repayment terms to minimize hardship.
Pat and Debby Boone headlined a Fort Worth show at the Tarrant County Convention Center arena on April 17 with Lonnie Shore as comic opening. Debby's star rise included You Light Up My Life and major TV appearances, while Pat boasted decades on the charts with multiple gold records and a platinum album. Hostesses and club members accompanied two Greyhound buses of attendees.
The 1978 Little League season starts Tuesday May 2 with Fincher Feed vs Wilson Cats and F M Bank vs Higginbotham s. Thursday features Golden Oak vs De Leon Peanut Company and F M Bank vs Crown Pump. Games run Tuesday Thursday and Friday evenings through May 19 with a concession run by four local residents.
De Leon Hospital and the De Leon Hospital Auxiliary sponsor a blood drive on Thursday May 4 from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. in the hospital classroom with West Texas Blood Services staff collecting donations. The drive aims to reach 75 pints to help patients across more than 40 area hospitals.
Producers Jesse Leach of Holdenville and Roy L. Gentry of Shawnee are named as member and alternate on the USDA peanut marketing program committee. Handlers Clint Williams of Madill and Jeff Fricke of Fredericksburg are appointed as additional members. The panel helps administer the peanut marketing agreement with three producer and three handler seats per region. Barbara Lindemann Schlei notes the aim to set quality standards ensuring wholesome peanuts, a program active since 1965.
Kindergarten registration is scheduled for May 11 and 12 from 9 00 a m to 2 30 p m at the kindergarten building. Parents must bring birth certificates and immunization records. Eligible students are those who will be five years old on or before September 1, 1978.
Governor Dolph Briscoe proclaims April 30 to May 7, 1978 as Soil Stewardship Week in Texas. The observance highlights protecting prime farmland from non agricultural use and reducing water pollution from farms, roadsides, and construction sites. Texas A&M Extension Service partners with conservation districts to promote wise soil and water management.
De Leon Independent School District states coach Jack Waggoner resigns as Bearcat head football coach and athletic director. He will assume duties as Humble High School head football coach near Houston, reporting for spring drills. Waggoner has coached in De Leon since 1970 with a 68-26-1 record and six district titles, and his Bearcats have dominated district play recently, including the 1975 state championship run. His family includes wife Mrs. Waggoner, and children Shawn Dawn Mica and Mark.
Central Texas Opportunities Inc Coleman has a Community Services Administration grant to assist elderly poor who could not pay bills last winter due to low income and high utility costs. Applicants 60 or older and meeting poverty guidelines may receive help with groceries utility and medical bills emergency repairs overdue rent and temporary shelter. Applications on Thursday April 27 from 9 AM to 2 PM at the Senior Citizens Building require Social Security number proof of income and copies of bills.
