Town Talk highlights spring blooms and charity trail ride

Gayle Wilkerson notes sunshine and green shows in South Texas as spring arrives. The county Heart Association plans a trail ride next weekend with Kerry Dudley and Dr. Gary Easley, donations aiding the American Heart Association. Kittens to compete in Region III-AA meet at Tarleton

Six Kitten track team members will participate in the Region III-AA Track Meet at Tarleton State University in Stephenville Friday and Saturday. Lori Womack will high jump at 4:00 p.m. Friday, with a 7:00 p.m. 400 meter relay, 7:30 p.m. 100 meter hurdles, and 8:00 p.m. 800 relay. Jill Scott and Verne Harrison run the 400 meter dash at 8:15 p.m., Cisneroz in the 200 meter at 8:30 p.m. Finals begin at 1:00 p.m. Saturday.

De Leon to Host District 12-AA Boys Track Meet Thursday

De Leon will host the District 12-AA Boys Track Meet on Thursday April 21 with field events starting at 9:00 a.m. and prelims at 1:00 p.m. Finals begin at 4:00 p.m. Teams from Ranger Dublin Hico Millsap Hamilton and De Leon compete across four divisions in a full day of events including pole vault discus shot put high jump and sprint and distance races.

De Leon School Board Announces 1983 84 Calendar

The De Leon School Board adopts the 1983-84 calendar with August 18 as faculty in service, August 22 opening day, Labor Day holiday September 5, Thanksgiving holidays November 24-25, and a sequence ending January 20 after winter break. Other six week periods and in service days are noted for staff and students.

Stolen Property Recovered West of De Leon

At about 5 p.m. on Friday April 1 German Constable Delton Keeze notified De Leon Constable Jerry Rich that stolen goods were found under a bridge four and a half miles west of De Leon. Jet values valued at 3500 dollars belonging to Hailburton and Company from Duncan Oklahoma were recovered. No charges have been filed.

First Christian Church Names New Pastor in De Leon

Rev. Carl G. Fuller has been called as pastor of the First Christian Church of De Leon, effective May 1, coming from Canton Texas. A native of Oklahoma he attended high school in Idabel and El Camino College in Los Angeles. He has served churches in California Oklahoma and Texas, most recently Wetumka Oklahoma, and has long been active in civic affairs.

School Break and Semester Schedule Snapshot

Daylight Saving Time begins this Sunday April 24 and runs to October 30 with clocks moved forward at 2 00 a.m. The Fullers Rev Fuller a 32nd degree Mason Shriner Past Master of his lodge and Alberta are members of the Order of Eastern Star with three sons and two daughters all married Rev Fuller looks forward to meeting the people of De Leon and a long friendly stay.

Heart Association Trail Buster Ride April 30 in Comanche

The Comanche County Heart Association sponsors a Trail Buster Trail Ride on Saturday April 30 from 1 to 5 pm. The 10 mile ride starts at Mercer's Gap Church with prizes for top fundraisers including a saddle blanket and saddle pad. Pre-register by calling Kerry Dudley or Dr. Gary Easley. Comanche Roping Club monitors will assist.

County Cancer Crusade Dates Set For April 24 25

Volunteers will conduct a door to door survey as part of the society annual raising crusade. The statewide project results will guide geographic emphasis planning by the organization. This is the notable effort for the year.

De Leon Students Shine at Regional UIL Literary Meet

De Leon High School entrants placed at the Region II AA UIL Literary Meet held at Tarleton State University in Stephenville. Donald McClure finished fifth in number sense and calculator applications, Lisa Williams fifth in spelling, Lori Womack sixth in shorthand, Mike Keith seventh in shorthand, and Julie Vera seventh in ready writing.

Kindergarten Pre-Registration Dates Are April 25 26

Kindergarten pre registration will be held on Monday and Tuesday April 25 and 26 at the old lunchroom building of the elementary school. Parents should bring birth certificates and immunization records for registering children. Eligible children are five years old before September 1 1983.

The 220th District Court grand jury last week returned 24 felony indictments and named fifteen individuals. It also passed seven cases and returned one no bill, with a recess requested in another case to continue investigation.

Statewide sales tax receipts dip as oil areas hit hard

State Comptroller Bob Bullock reports 33.7 million in local one percent sales tax checks shared with 974 cities. Nationwide, receipts fell over three percent from last year, marking a 21 year first annual drop. April payments totaled 19,858.32 locally, with varied city amounts listed including Brownwood 45,557.09 and Breckenridge 20,774.91.
