De Leon celebrates U I L literary contest winners in this week’s paper. District 10 A track meet at Cen Tex Stadium in Brownwood on April 20 features field events at 11 30 a m preliminaries at 3 p m and finals at 7 p m. Future Homemakers raised 1200 for March of Dimes with a Walk a Thon. Jaycees plan a May 16 volleyball tourney for fundraising. Peach and Melon Festival set for July 31 to August 5, 1978, with planning underway. 4 H members will wash cars at the Baptist Church parking lot Saturday to raise funds for a summer exchange trip.
The Comanche County Commissioners Court last Monday approved a five percent pay increase for all county employees after a Grievance Committee secured final approval of a fifteen percent raise for elected county officials. The increases take effect April 1.
Comptroller Bob Bullock will send Enforcement Officer James Island from Abilene to Comanche County Courthouse on Wednesday April 26 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. to assist taxpayers with state taxes and form preparation. Knox City claimed the A division title and Haskell won the AA division at the Tenth Annual Bearcat Relays. Team totals listed include Knox City 148 in A and Haskell 137 in AA. standout performances feature Tim Hare in shot and Greg Sult in discus, plus record efforts by Bangs and Knox City in sprints and relays.
The Peach and Melon Festival committee plans a week long event July 31 through August 5 with theme Down on the Farm. Bodie Weaver chairs the committee with Larry Boyd as vice chair and Hank Williams Jr as Tuesday night entertainer for a two hour show and post show dance.
The Bearcat varsity and Cubcat track teams join six schools in the District 10-A meet at Cen-Tex Stadium Brownwood. The event, moved from Friday to Thursday April 20, includes De Leon Bangs Early Goldthwaite Ranger Dublin and Cross Plains with field events at 11 30 a m preliminaries at 3 p m and finals at 7 p m. Bangs and Early are favored to win the high school team title.
State Comptroller reports April sales tax rebates rose 24 percent from a year earlier with checks totaling 20.2 million mailed to 899 Texas cities as their share of the local option one percent tax. Year to date rebates reach 121.6 million, up 15 percent from 105.7 million in early 1977, with De Leon at 928.50 and other towns including Cross Plains 1 770.43 Dublin 1 042.04 Ranger 3 805.90 Eastland 4 459.32 Early 1 313.56 Hamilton 3 660.00.
De Leon schools hosted the District 10-A UIL Literary Contest on Saturday April 15. High school winners include Robin Hood first in Spelling and Plain Writing Missy Owen second Sherry Miller fourth Elizabeth Taylor second in Poetry Interpretation. Other top placers included Donald Fields in Slide Rule Christi Keith fourth Donna Nowlin fifth in Typing Mark Barton fifth in Ready Writing and Sig Wolfe fifth in Prose Reading. Junior high winners were Bobby Forrest first John Dennington first Cindy Wilkerson second Cathy Wright fourth and Jill Bowman fourth in Oral Reading Jackson Boen fifth in junior high Ready Writing. Elementary divisions saw first place in 5th grade picture memory Pamela Fagan Stacy Whitt Melinda Johnson Kenneth McKillip Tommy Hammond and a tie for first Wendy Boswell first Kelli Cook second in Story Telling Mike Keith tied for first in Spelling and Plain Writing Grades 5-6 with a perfect paper Bryan Andress tied for third.
De Leon FHA Chapter sponsored a 20 kilometer Walk a Thon on April 8 with 37 participants incl five adults. Rosa Taylor won a W H Smith gift certificate at the destination and Melinda Buckley earned a Higginbotham’s prize for $203 raised. Clubs and groups aided, Lions Club and Chamber of Commerce provided route cards and check points, FHA mothers hosted the picnic. Approximately $1200 was collected for the March of Dimes.
The Texas Highway Patrol reported eight rural traffic accidents in Comanche County during March 1978 with no deaths and three injuries. Year to date Comanche County totals reach 29 crashes, two deaths, nine injuries, as District 6A records 1,617 rural crashes, 40 deaths, 745 injuries. Last year at the same point district totals were 1,489 crashes, 59 deaths, 860 injuries.
De Leon Independent School District invites applications for students seeking transfer into the district. Transfers are approved on a rolling basis for surrounding community students, with final decline decisions in May. Applications and blanks are available at the superintendent's office on weekdays during school hours.
Will Williams won first place in the 1978 poster contest at De Leon Elementary School. The event was sponsored by the Upper Leon Soil and Water Conservation District. Will, son of Mr. and Mrs. Swayne Williams, received the blue ribbon from J. W. Sadberry, district official.
The annual poster contest in the Upper tion District features all third and fourth graders. This year 150 entries are judged with ribbons awarded in each school and grade. Will belongs to Mrs Frances Morgan’s fourth grade class.
De Leon Chief of Police Rodney Jeanis reports 167 total calls answered in March 1978 with activities including four accidents and related incidents.
